Chipmunk Chatter

July 12, 2009

Do you have these where you live? Either we have one extremely active chipmunk, or we have a zillion, because everywhere I look outside is a hole in the ground.

I find peanuts stored in my fertilizer bags in my garage, and if someone happens to leave the storm door on my front door just slightly ajar, they'll store peanuts in that gap too! It's crazy!

Now my son, the patron saint of the animal world, has taken to feeding them. He has bird seed on a frisbee under a tree, and the chipmunk will run to the frisbee and fill his cheeks to the absolute bursting point. He then scampers off to store it.

Within 2 minutes, he's back again for the next cheek full of seeds. This goes on all day long.

I can't bear to tell my son to stop feeding them, but can you imagine how healthy those babies are gonna be? And their babies...and their babies...and their babies... all of which need new holes....

It is all the high pitch songs that would drive me crazy! LOL!

Okay I'm trying very hard not to giggle with the "babies and their babies and their babies...." Ummm well I guess you just became the wild kingdom for chipmunks! My bet is more than one.

We have the same thing here, although we are in the "country" so to speak. Sometimes it's amusing to listen to them "talk" to each other. Other times it is down right annoying!

So You are a Nut in a Nutshell (a chipmunk delight by the way) so is it fitting that you are now the queen of the chipmunks? *giggles*

Who loves ya?

I can't help but laugh. SORRY.
I know the feeling.. my kids have taken it upon themselves to feed the squirrels. Bella can't stand them, or them her.
She comes first though. I've had to put my foot down, unfortunately it hasn't worked.
LOL,

HAHAHAHAHA! Sorry, I'm not laughing at your post (mostly), I'm laughing at Cj's comment 'cuz it's just too funny! ;) Maybe the chipmunks caught wind of your blog title and figured you were the cool one to hang out with...either that, or 'cuz your son is feeding them and they've now informed all their other chipmunk buddies that your place is the place to be if they want to be fat and sassy... ;)

Good luck with that - I'm still trying to figure out how to get rid of the voles that keep wiping out one flower bed with their munching in spite of what I do to deter it... :)

Christyrenee said...

We have them too! But I don't mind them ;) I kept seeing holes all over the yard and thought they were from voles - they are chipmunk holes!! lol. I think they are cute little critters and they don't seem to bother anything around here. That baby is so cute!!!

Awww...cute little bugger.

As a kid I had a pet chipmunk, briefly, who lived in the wall of our house. My parents never let me get too close, but I'd get tiny graham crackers and feed him a little. I could look at him for hours.

And just think, maybe you can teach your chipmunks how to sing in really high-pitched voices, and then they could go on the radio. Think of the potential here, Blueviolet!

Chocolate Covered Daydreams said...

Do they really make high pitch sounds? As you can tell, we must not have chipmunks here in the desert because I've never seen one.

You can tell your son that they are being put on the chipmunk version of Jenny Craig...only 1 serving per day.

Oh, I know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We have bird feeders and you can see a couple of squirrels trying their hardest to reach them! It's so annoying! LOL

I have chipmunk cheeks. Does that count?

Diane said...

i think they are cuuuute! i feed the squirrels. at my old house there was one that would take food right out of my hand. i think they can give you rabies though so that's probably not smart.

Mimi said...

Oh no, feeding them is bad. If you have one you will soon have 1,548,987 of them. By like next week!

My parents have been waging a battle against them for years. They live in a brick house & the little chipmunks burrow into the mortar to nest.

They had to have their front porch rebuilt! The little friggers ruined a brick porch.

I wish you luck & when you tire of them a BB gun works wonders!

Rebecca Jo said...

Yep... you got new critter friends... you gotta keep feeding them.. there'd be chimunk tears if the foot stopped - cant have that happening!

Krystyn said...

We have them, too! The taunt our cat in addition to putting holes everywhere!

It's the same way over in Central Oregon with ground squirrels. There are thousands of them. They jumped into their holes as we walked or biked past them on our vacation.

They sure are cute though!

We have a few squirrels around here, but I haven't seen any chippies (a friend of mine calls them squirrels with racin stripes).

Heather, aka Jake's Mommy said...

They are stinkin' cute!! I say let them stay around until you fall and break your ankle in one of their holes! ;-) Then we can get ticked at them.

Justine said...

I've never seen a chipmunk around here but I would love to! And where is this little guy finding the peanuts???

We don't have chipmonks over here. I miss them (and I miss rabbits too).

We have tons of chipmunks in our backyard. It seems like they multiply overnight!

Jennifer said...

Yikes. No chipmunks here, so I still think they're oh-so-cute and would feed them too. LOL!

We have a couple who live in our bushes. They are fast, lol!

Oh dear. You are between a rock and a hard place. Or between two chipmunk tunnels. Your choice.

Your son has a great heart. These chipmunks sure are hard workers. I'm afraid for you for next year though. I can only imagine how they will multiply.

LT said...

I know you are not supposed to feed them, but I am a softy and would be doing exactly what your son does! Cute pics too!

Lin said...

I used to have one chipmunk that would come around, but I don't see him anymore. Which is a shame, because I LOVE chipmunks. Any that you don't want--just send them over to me!!

Look at the bright side - you'll have your very own ready-made golf course. How cool is that?

We have very active squirrels around here but no cutie pie chipmunks. I'd feed them too! :0)

Maybe this is some sort of penance you are paying, like maybe you've done something hideously awful in a past life you know, like eaten a chipmunk perhaps? Just a thought :)

But no. We don't have chipmunks, we have tons of squirrels and bunnies. And a rat terrier dog that digs chipmunk holes.

Heatherlyn said...

You make a good point! They are cute ... I wouldn't be crazy about the holes.

Stacey said...

We've got squirrels, chipmunks and prairie dogs and I know that they are all cute, but they are the reason my pug dog barks 85% of the day. I look so forward to winter when the sightings come fewer and far between.

Awwwww! They are so cute!!!

what beauty pics....we dont have chipmunks in Malta only wild rabbits and hedgehogs! i expect the holes are bothersome but they are too sweet

K said...

We just have some very active squirrels.

At least they're all so cute.

Bobby G said...

Super cute! but we dont have them by us, we have squirrels, everywhere

Amy said...

How sweet..

We have lots of bunnies and squirrels. For some reason, the chipmunks where I grew up hung out at the cemetaries!

I think the only thing that saves me from disliking chipmunks like I dislike mice or rats is that they are sooooooo cute!

Mrs4444 said...

Pretty darned cute, I have to admit. Mr.4444 set up a Have-a-Heart trap to catch the chipmunks who chewed a hole in our garage door and keep coming in to steal bird seed and such. Sometimes, he takes them on a long drive and drops them off somewhere. Other times, he "take care of them" with his friend Winchester. (just kidding-I the gun's name is not Winchester-I made the name up, heehee.)

Me said...

Oh the holes! But they are so darn cute!

I got a good photo of one on a rock when I pulled up in front of my house one day, and did not know what it was...so damn cute!!!

We have a cute little chipmunk that always comes up to our window to chat with our cat. It's adorable!

pam said...

I love chipmunks, but we do not have them here.

We do at the cottage though, we will see them next week. I will buy a bag of peanuts and try to tame them a little.

I had a chipmunk one summer that would run right up my leg and perch on my shoulder. Chippy was so tame!

Yaya said...

I think they're so cute, but yes, we are inundated with chipmunk holes too.

Tiaras said...

we try to kill our - they annoy me and dig holes everywhere!!!!!
