Mama Do, Mama DON'T!

July 2, 2009

Those of you who are long term readers know that I have had somewhat of an ongoing issue/problem/seething FURY about the fact that my mother constantly tells me my hair is so dark.

But, I think she finally got the message about that, I think... (thank you, bloggy)

Last month, my sister and my mom picked me up for this whatever-it-was and I get in the back seat with my nice shiny straightened hair. I hadn't even pulled the door shut and my mom spins around and says, "I think I like your hair pulled back better."

Um....ok.

Then, last Sunday after church, we were standing outside chatting and she touches my natural curled hair in a headband and says, "Aren't you wearing your hair the other way anymore? You could pull your bangs off to the side and it would look cute."

Somebody kill me.

Growing up I had a friend whose mom would tell me that I was too skinny too fat.. too blonde.. too pink (yep - I was a punk on occasion) and I asked my friend, Lisa if her mom didn't like me because she is always criticizing me... she told her mom I asked.. the next time I saw her mom she said, "Kelly, I only say those things because I love you and I think of you as my kid.. I don't want your head to get too big because you are beautiful so I knock you down a peg or two" so maybe... your mom is knocking you down a peg or two... cuz from reading your blog.. I do know that you are beautiful!
Love,
Kelly

Hilarious! I guess we are never too old to receive advice from our moms. Mine called yesterday to remind me to lock my doors. :)

re: fairie doors....I found mine from a little fairie on etsy who lives in Ann Arbor. If you want to know about the history of the Ann Arbor Fairie doors be sure to do a google. They are all over town...so charming.

My mom does the same thing and so does my grandma. I love dark hair. Fix it the way you like!

LOL, when my mom says anything to me.. I pull out my cosmo license and say.. ahem.. I LOVE YA MA.. I DO.. I know what I'm doing after 1600 hours and a my demon boss from years past. Working a salon for years with "it". I know my colors...and I know what looks good on my chubby face. She clenches her lips and stays quiet. I then give her a HUGE kiss and say THANK YOU!

It drives me nuts too!

heh. Same here, rest her soul.

My mother's hangup was the curls. She insisted that if I had to have naturally curly hair, I needed to keep it cut short. If I had straight hair, I needed a pixie cut :)

Any other styles were "just not too motherly, just doesn't look nice sweetie."

When does it end?? My mom continues on that sort of stuff forever--I'm 46 years old!!! Kill me now. At least I know I am not alone in this hell.

My mom still "suggests" things to me!! LOL!

My mother does the same thing to me, only she asks "Why don't you let your hair grow out?" One of these days I may as well just shave it all off just to spite her.

Moms are never happy are they?

How lovely. :) Not sure what I'd do, other than...do whatever I wanted to do anyway. Shoot - however you like your hair, wear it that way!

Oh man, just can't please her huh? I'd buzz your head, see if she likes that.

The scary part is that we turn into our moms more & more the older we get. I'm going to be 42 this week & when I look in the mirror I can see my mom. EEEEEK

Hard to please much? :)

You just have to kiss and say, "I love you Mom but I also love me...the way I am."

Too funny! Gotta love moms.

She's doing that on purpose you know? She is just messing with your head. I loved doing that when my kids were little. Now, that they are a little older they never fall for it.

Isn't it a momma's job to be indecisive?

Oh, that's sad. Why do we moms mess up like that?? :-(

I dare you to put on a pink fright wig the next time you are together with her--just sayin'...

Blessings!

I like Octamom's suggestion.

Now I feel guilty about pestering my daughter about her hair! LOL

I bet your mom at least calls you by the right name. Mind you, I am her only child.

I think as mothers, you just lose your mind at some point. I know I have already done so.

So you have a Mom like that too? Mine is the same way, but not about my hair. If it's not one thing, it's the other. LOL. I am sure your hair looks great whatever way you style it. :o)

I truly love my Mother but we maintain a good relationship because of the simple fact that I can tune her out whenever I want.

I understand.

I hear ya. Right now I think my own mom is thinking that my hair is too long. ;o)

Wonder if I didn't live 2767 miles away from my mom if she'd be the same way? ;)

Heatherlyn said...

FOR REAL?!! That would drive me crazy. Or I would start taking bets on what she was going to say about my hair the next time I saw her. You could make a little money on the side that way. :)
