The Unpolished Years - W/W Wednesday

August 19, 2009

I warned you that I went through a rough period during my childhood.

I believe it began in 5th grade.

Sweet disproportionate shag-aroo and gigantically proportioned teardrop glasses! And, the plaid....why the plaid, mommy...

A Nut in a Nutshell

And bring out the neat-o, girl, cuz you. are. workin'. that patch pocket.

A Nut in a Nutshell

I am SO groovin' my groovy here, although my sister in the background did an ambitious button-up job she should proud of. Thumbs up, G.

A Nut in a Nutshell

Really? Could I be any more of a goober?

A Nut in a Nutshell

Thanks mommy for letting me start 7th grade, the most socially crucial period of my life, with a Holly Hobby shirt and faux denim bell-bottomed overalls. You sealed my destiny with that fortune cookie.

And then the moment when we all come into our own, I didn't. I started my impressionable freshman year of highschool as a boy.

I hope you enjoyed this little journey through my awkward, floundering years. I didn't.

I have the SAME photos! The same plaid clothing, (colors are off a bit) LOL. Mine were orange and brown! the same bell bottoms and boy was I a hippie child. I LOVE these photos! The only thing you're missing is the flower tiara! My mom would make me up one daily!!!!
What was she thinking?

YOU ROCK VIOLET!

I think we all have that reaction when we look back over our childhood. The 70s and 80s were awkward periods in fashion, I think! Especially the hairstyles. But at the time they made a little more sense. I think your freshman picture is beautiful.

Theta Mom said...

Those glasses are classic! I think I have the same ones in brown! LOL

Rob said...

You rocked those glasses like a champ!!! LOL! All kids in the 70's and 80's wore plaid. When I look at pics of myself as a kid I just crack up.

Happy WW!

LT said...

I so feel your pain! I always had the wrong hair, the wrong clothes and what was it with the plaid?!? I can only hope I am more in tune when my daughter gets to that age!

Blogging Mama Andrea said...

If we all were willing to look back deep deep in our archives I am sure we could find some gems. I un-fondly remember a red scrunchi headband that made several scary appearances with a light denim jacket...

Queenie Jeannie said...

Oh hun, we ALL looked like that!! So don't feel bad!

Secret Mom Thoughts said...

We all have awkward periods in our lives. Plaid was really in back then. I have similar photos.

Barely Domestic Mama said...

Oh my goodness. I think most of have those mom what were you thinking moments when we look back at our youth. :)

HAHAHAHAHAHA............LOVE this!!

Personally I think you were beautiful and I am sure all the boys loved your Holly Hobby shirt!

AAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!I lived your life!
The big plastic glasses, the Kmart grill, seriously bad hair etc.
How'd we turn out to be such babes anyway?!

Linda @ My Trendy Tykes said...

Hey, I am diggin' that plaid.

Run DMT said...

I think I had some of those same shirts! LOL I went through an awkward phase, too. Awwww...the joys of middle school. Yay. But look at us now. We are HOT! ;-)

Happy WW!

You totally rocked those glasses! You look hip to me! We are always our own worst critic.

Lisa @ Boondock Ramblings said...

Oh you are so brave to share!

I won't do it myself, but you are brave anyhow. :-)

Very funny stuff and I know all about the awkward phase. I think I'm still in it.

Buckeroomama said...

I don't wear glasses, but my hubby and his siblings all did and they all had the same big glasses in all their old photos! Those glasses must be the 'fad' back then. Heh.

Rebecca Jo said...

LOVE the older pictures!!!

I think I had a similar jump suit with the big pocket! I did have the same sandals though that you are sportin in there!

AAHHH - memories of yester-years... fun!

Kristen Andrews said...

blame it on the fashion of those times, I had some lovely clothes too great that you still have the pics

You ROCKED the 'awkward stage', my friend! You look exactly like one of my best friends - especially in that last photo, except she had blonde hair. :)

You are a swan! :)

Mrsbear said...

What a great idea. I think you were adorable, but I suffered from similar awkwardness. Minus the glasses and the braces and the fab fashion choices. ;)

Mango Girl said...

All of our mom's shopped at the same stores. Or in my case, copied the patterns and sewed them herself.

Wasn't youth in the 70's a blast?

Drahdrah said...

Those look like some of my family photos !!! Happy WW.

Upstatemomof3 said...

Oh my goodness I could pull out my own pictures and give you quite the laugh but I will save those for another time. :) I grew up as a child of the 80's so I am sure you can imagine what I looked like.

Whimsical Creations said...

You are very brave. I think all of our parents did this to us. I looked like Laura Ingalls with 2 braids until 7th grade.

Urban Thought said...

That is truly classic.

Felicia said...

Awww.. you were cute!! :)

conversationswithmoms said...

Your captions about your journey in school was classic. Luckily, I don't think I even have pictures of my fashion faux pas of my past.

Mighty M said...

Haha!! We all have a period of time in our life when we could use a little polishing. Someday I will scan some pictures of me....maybe!! ;-)

Kati said...

Man.. HHAHAAHAHA! Okay.. I got that out. Seriously.. those are too funny.

I guees you could blame it on the year... maybe!

Either way, you made my morning and it totally reminded me of "That 70's Show"!

Ginny Marie said...

You are so brave for sharing those awkward years photos. Mine are staying buried...forever!

P.S. I'm sorry my comment form is impossible! :(

Lauren and Emily said...

Hilarious! Great pictures...those awkward years were bad for me too!

Sara Elizabeth Bonds said...

Oh my good gosh! These are too good. I love them. I love them all. I totally have some from around 4th - 6th grade that I hate with a passion. Lots of perms for me at that age, and an older sister who was still trying to get the '80s rise of my hair. LOL! You are my hero for posting these!

Swoozie said...

Ugh! Those pictures look like a walk through my 70's photo album. Which is kept under lock and key and hidden in an undisclosed place..........

But...thanks for being brave and sharing those awesome photos! Loved them!

Mrs4444 said...

OMG, Blue! Loved these shots; you were cute as a button. The funniest part of this post, though, was that you felt the need to protect those pictures by stamping your site across them--WAY too funny!!

{Kiki} said...

WOW! WOW! WOW! I'm LOL right now. Sorry, is that cruel? I just love your pictures. I had the awkward stages too. The worst part was that my mother dressed me and my sis alike, and cut our hair the same. We both had bowl cuts and boy cuts until middle school. We are scarred for life. I just might have to put a picture on my blog. She would kill me though. Happy WW and take care.

We all have skeletons in our closet sweetie and usually they come in the form of photos.
But ya know what? You went on and on about how goofy looking you were but you failed to acknowledge your assets. Look at those long legs!

But yes. My mother insisted that I sport a pixie cut and wear white anklets and pinafores. Why are mothers so mean?

Suz said...

LMFAO. Where is that picture of you in a terry cloth romper?

I am laughing aloud in the lab, which is sort of embarrassing, but worth it.

Hit 40 said...

I had the awful perm thing going!! And my hair was already curly. So, it looked like a poodle.

Your mom was going for that Dorthy Harmill Ice Skating Look. I probably spelled her name wrong. Too lazy to look it up.

PropellerHeadMom said...

Gotta love plaid :-) I have a lot of photos just like yours. I think I still have my wooden clogs and my mood ring somewhere!

Mrs. Fish aka Two Fish said...

Ok mine are bad if not just as worse!! Bad perm, braces, ugh, even the dreaded pre-teen acne that hit so I REALLY REALLY hated life back then. At least we all turned from Ugly Ducks into beautiful swans. Happy WW

Cinnamon said...

Did we all have that bowl haircut as children? I mean, really... I think every single hairstyle was out to lunch for the entire 70s! Easiest job EVER!
That said, I think you were adorable! Holly Hobby shirt or not. (My clothes looked pretty much the same.. we can blame our mothers but really, was there anything else in the stores back then?)
Good for you for posting these! :)

Tiaras said...

my school photos look the same - except I have burned all traces of them!

Rachel said...

Oh wow. Brilliant (and brave) post. I love it!!!

Kathie @ my net finds said...

I started my freshman year with a short hair cut as well....I still can't look at that picture! ;-)

LadyStyx said...

I think alot of us went through that awkward stage. For the first several years of school (k-4th) I had the short boy-look hair cuts too. Problem was, I looks more like my dad than my mom...

Dee said...

HAHAHA..how did you get pictures of me? I totally had glasses and braces too..I still curse my mom for not letting me switch to contacts sooner! :)

buffalodick said...

You had everything but a pocket protector! Very brave of you to do this! Pretty good stuff today, kid!
P.S. My wife's nickname for almost 40 yrs- The Goob, or Goobie...

HaB said...

LOVE the plaid! LOL. At least you have the courage to show your awkward moments. I keep mine well hidden under lock and key.

You crack me up!! I totally had clothes like that too!!

Louise said...

Honestly I think we all had those "special" clothes.

Kara @ His, Hers & Ours said...

Oh wow! Yes, yes...I think we all have those pictures. The flashbacks I got from looking at your clothes! Kudos to you for being brave and posting! I don't know if I could! lol

Where's the knee high socks, though? ;)

Amy said...

Thanks for sharing . I love all of the pictures. Really I did.

LiveLaughLoveCj said...

Some of those photos could be from my "floundering years" (giggles).

I can't help but laugh (a little) cause now I remember it all too well. What was with our parents dressing us like that, hair cuts like that, glasses like that?

Thanks for the walk down memory lane.

Simply Being Mommy said...

Awww, don't be so hard on yourself.

I think we all have pictures that we can look back on and wonder what were our parents thinking.

Susie said...

Those are awesome memories to share!

Genny said...

Love your old pictures!

Heatherlyn said...

How funny! Was your hair curly? Is that why you kept it short? And, I'm thinking the plaid jacket that when with the pink shirt is not so bad. Cute, even! Fun pictures! And I think a lot of people dressed like that then. Fashion is a really funny thing in retrospect!

GypsyFox The Glamorous Betty Crocker said...

I too feel your pain, my mom never really made me waer girly stuff, in fact having 2 older brothers, believe it or not, she made me wear their hand me downs LOL!! you still shine through all of that

The Jacobsen Family! said...

You know I've been looking forward to this since last week...!! =)
It's not as bad as you made it out to be... Looks just like most people's pics from then! You know there are some a billion times worse. And then there are those who STILL dress like that today!
I'm so glad I don't have a scanner! LOL!

Kristina P. said...

I was just as awkard!

Krystyn said...

I'm pretty sure we all have photos like those. And, our kids will ask the same questions of us when they become adults!

Pricilla said...

I think I wore those same glasses. heh heh

Kimberly said...

I love your pics! I think that its hilarious for anyone when they look back and see what they were wearing back in the day.

No wonder you loved your uncool glasses so much! Its what you knew - just kidding with you! :)

kyooty said...

i had that hair style for your freshman year but I was young enough that the pictures are distroyable. :)

Jennifer said...

You weren't kidding. At all.

I mean, look, you can't do much about the clothing, that was the style of the day (?)... but the hair? AND then the glasses? Wow.

I mean, WOW.

Sera said...

These are great pictures, and shoot, we all hate pictures of ourselves at those stages.

Alicia said...

Oh my gosh.....that is classic!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Your captions made it so funny!!!!!!

Nina said...

You are one brave gal because I have many of those bad pictures and I just don't think I could share them. Of course, we were probably all in this same boat. LOL....

Karen @ If I Could Escape . . . said...

Oooh, how brave of you to share! I think we've all had the awkward years, fortunately I don't have too many photos from mine laying around! LOL

Happy WW!

The Blonde Diaries said...

I smiled at your photos. I know it was probably painful to live through those years but they are so neat for me to look at since I suffered through the 80s not the 70s.

Amy said...

your a brave soul! On the bright side most everyone looked like that back then. I am sportin' a lovely perm in most of my pictures. Not the cute perm either. Either that or I have the brushed out perm fro. What were our parents thinking?

The Blonde Duck said...

Awww! Kudos to you for being so brave to post them!

Angela said...

Thanks for sharing these, they made my day. :)

Maybe some day I'll be brave enough to share old photos of myself as well.

Why did our mothers put us through this torture???

You should post a current picture to balance things out!

This is so funny. There are many days when I am dressing my girls that I think I hope they don't look back at pictures and think what was my mom thinking? LOL.

a49erfangirl said...

LOL I so don't like the clothes from back then. I look back on my pictures and I freak at what the clothes looked like and my hair cuts. I had short hair too.

LZ said...

Groovy! I LOVE that you posted these. I think it was said well...everyone has these pictures in some form. Big hair? Coke bottle glasses? Acid-washed jeans? Good to laugh at ourselves, considering how foxy we all are now!

Jingle said...

You are truly brave. I don't know if I could post my less than lovely years! LOL!

Pam said...

That is so funny. I have so many of the same clothes as you!

I think I had the same glasses.

Darn we were cool.

Chocolate Covered Daydreams said...

I so love your fashion sense because it was mine too. The glasses, the plaids, the flooding pants..the Wendy (hairstyle). But the 7th grade outfit was hysterical! I remember the Holly Hobbie movement!

Oh now, those are priceless. Didn't we all look like that then? Thank you, thank you for sharing them!
:)

Brian Miller said...

and somehow you survived...lol.

Deb said...

Ha. Been there, done that. I started 7th grade wearing ankle socks and a plaid skirt which didn't do much for my stick figure. Most of the other girls had fishnets and mini-skirts and curves. Not sure if awkward is strong enough to describe those years for me. Enjoyed my first ever visit here. Take care.

Lin said...

I am sooooo intimidated when I see the comment count above, say, 5000! But I've got to chime in on this one--that is some nasty photo history you got going on here, chicky!! You are SO in the Dork Off II with the likes of these photos. Criminy--I think you'd be crowned Dork of All Time!! Hee! Hee! Sorry, but you cracked me up.

Renée aka Mekhismom said...

Everyone looked like that back then. Don't feel bad. I can pull out similar photos, if only I could find my album.

I think we all had our moments we wished were never caught on film! Although I don't think I'm brave enough to post mine online!

Sarah said...

I'm afraid of posting my pictures from this age, but just think, it sets us up perfectly for one of those "I was a nerd, but look at me now" talkshows. LOL.

Heather of the EO said...

That. Was so much fun. Strangely, you look exactly like my sister. Only she was blonde then. But the glasses and the clothes? Exact. Cracked me up :)

Grand Pooba said...

Oh but I sure did! You are and were one hot mama! Geek or no geek :)

babyrocasmama said...

OMG! We had the same mother! or they had the same fashion sense,LOL.

I have some awful childhood pictures...large hexagonal glasses with the temple at the bottom, bad bangs, plaid...

The night before I started second grade, my mother decided to cut my bangs. She wet them. pulled them straight out tightly and cut....I looked like a combo of Raggedy Ann and Holly freaking Hobby. It didn't help much that I was the "smart girl" either. I was screwed.

THANKS MOM.

Luckily, in about 5th or 6th grade, I started picking out my own clothes and hairstyles.

I feel your pain, BV. You have no idea how much.

Jaime said...

i would never post pics of myself when i was little. i have REALLY curly hair. it grows super fast. and instead of trying to deal with the snarl of tangles, my parents chopped my hair short.

well...it may have been convenient for them. but it lead to my 'fro years. white jew girls from jersey should NEVER be rocking THAT style.
