Did I Ever Tell You About Our Restaurant?

November 10, 2009

Once upon a time we had a dream. It was a dream to own our own restaurant, and one day that dream came true.

We bought a restaurant downtown and made plans to remodel it, including ripping off this whole exterior facade and re-bricking it to fit in with the downtown architecture better.

BEFORE:

old exterior

The lights and ceiling decorations as well as the neon were on the hit list. We decided to restore the floor.

old bar with wood floors

This dance floor was taken out completely.

old dance floor

One surprise we had is that when we removed the rotten wood floors, there was just dirt underneath, no foundation. We had to start over completely and lay a cement foundation. We also had to re-roof the entire building, which was totally unexpected.

AFTER:

After nearly a year of construction, we had our new restaurant and were ready to open. With the new brick front and windows, the place had a much brighter, cheerier feeling to it.

new exterior

The bar was refinished and stained and covered with a copper top. All of the gaudy neon lights were removed and replaced.

The booths were redesigned and upholstered and new bar tables and chairs were added.

booths bar side

Airy open archways were put in between the two sides of the restaurant.

The floors were tiled and a local artist's paintings put on display.

My husband wrote the menu for it and was the owner/general manager.

We partnered with a family member and opened for business. It was a smashing success and quickly became the most popular restaurant in the area.

Then one day, evil struck. Actually evil had been lurking, but we did not know. Our partner was bad, very bad, oh so really rotten bad.

And we were financially destroyed. We walked away from the restaurant and away from the dream.

The End.

That is awful and so sad... and being that you said you partnered with a family member and the partner ended up being "bad"... I am assuming that your family member was bad. Which makes it even tougher.

I'm so sorry. The restaurant looked wonderful. Y'all did great work... I'm just sorry you got taken advantage of.

Love the look and all the changes that were made.

Be VERY PROUD that you did something to fulfill your dream even if it didn't work out in the end. Most people live in the dream stage and don't take that extra step. You took the chance and that is amazing.

Oh, so heartbreaking, the place looked absolutely beautiful and you had take such care in the renovation. I could feel your excitement in the changes just from your descriptions, so thoughtful to change the front to blend better with the town, I am so sorry to hear that your dream was ruined by a dishonest partner. So, so sad for your entire family.

Funny in my mind said...

I am so sorry that happened to you! Our restaurant is our dream too but it isn't quite that nice yet (it needed a lot of work and the economy sucks) but I can sympathize because my husband went into business with a family member some years ago and he lost it all because the guy had terrible business sense and we had to dig ourselves out.

Kristy said...

Seriously, pretty much the exact same thing happened to my husband and I! Except it was a pizzeria and it was his brother that screwed him over!
1 week before brother was to give hubby his 1/2 of the money, he backed out. And then, 2 months later this evil brother decided to SUE my husband, his own brother, for money he had put into the business while he was there. A whopping $7,000, when HE was to give us $35,000!
Needless to say, my hubby got smart and counter sued him for that money, and evil brother dropped everything VERY quickly!
I feel so bad for hubby, it was a longtime dream of his, and I only hope one day we can open another, just the 2 of us!
I can honestly say, I feel your pain!

The Head Eagle said...
