I Do It For the Dimes

November 16, 2009

I've just finished yet another bottle of diet Dr. Pepper. Each one yields me a sparkling silver dime and I smile.

That is such a lie.

There is no smiling involved. Ever.

With every bottle I finish, I groan in disgust as I add it to the already overflowing bags of empty cans and bottles in my garage.

There are only a few states that punish us in this way and mine is one of them.

I hate Michigan.

Well, you can almost make a phone call...who knows if you have enough maybe you can get an ice cream cone.

Frau said...

We have those here too and in the beginning it would spit mine back out, apparently it has to be a bottle purchased at that store how the machine knows? I think it is a size thing!

Bernie said...

Don't be shy, tell us how you really feel. :)

mo.stoneskin said...

With "every" bottle you finish? How many do you drink?! With all those sweeteners you should be smiling inanely!

Menopausal New Mom said...

What is that thing? I don't think we have them here in Canada, we just throw our empty and rinsed cans and bottles into a blue bag, then the city picks them up and hauls them to the recycling plant for us. Maybe you should move here!

Can't you pretend it's found money, like an uncovered treasure??!! You could be the sexy, but fierce female pirate, wielding a sword and making the state of Michigan walk the plank.

I'd want to buy the movie rights!

Wendy said...

lol, I hate taking back cans and bottles but I love getting the money back! My kids are at the age where they love to help so it is not to bad right now! I will always gladly take your cans off your hands! :P

I have never seen one of those machine. Ever. Things are fancy in Michigan. :)

Nichol said...

Very familiar. I hate take cans back but the kids love it....

Wait! Can we first talk about the pure deliciousness that IS Diet Doc? Oh. My. Gaaaawd!
Love it, love it!
:)

Busy Bee Suz said...

You get paid to drink? I do it for free....dang, what is wrong with me?

Carolyn G said...

Cool machines. There should be more of those. I wish we could still take back bottles to the store and get credit. When we were little we would always do that and get candy money.

mama-face said...

Yeah, a dime is better than nothing. Which is what we get here. I'd be a rich woman. We just throw them in our designated garbage can and roll it to the curb. Woot WOOT. But we have to pay to do so. Stupid State where I live.

buffalodick said...

Bottle law took getting used to, but really cleaned up the roads...

Stacy (the Random Cool Chick) said...

Oh I had forgotten all about that part of living in Michigan!! It's a PITA, but like buffalodick said, it sure did clean up the roads! ;)

Buckeroomama said...

I'm glad we don't have those here. Might be incentive enough for the kiddos to start nagging about getting soda in the grocery store so that they can slot them into the machine and get the dimes! Of course, I would have to sacrifice *ahem* myself so that they can have the empty cans.

Sharon said...

Oh wow!! i think I love those things.. and you get a dime? Cool! Here we just toss and then never see it or dimes again!! I hope they have these in Virginia!! :)

(Don't worry... Im sure the novelty will wear off and I 'll curse them!)

Too Many Hats said...

We have that here. I have about 3 bags in the garage as I type. I just need to put their leaking selfs in the car and drag a kid with me to feed the machine.

Joy said...

I hear ya.

What I hate most about bringing back returnables is the SMELL of the area that takes them...gross.

Kimi said...

My hubs insists on recycling our cans. So I have to rinse them all out, smash them and store them in huge garbage bags on the back porch until we get to the recycling center which is forever away.

singedwingangel said...

ok we don't have anything like that in KY. Shoot we just stopped selling Pepsi in returnable glass bottles about 10 years ago.. Although we do still have a soda yuou get in returnable bottles that give ya 20 cents a bottle course it is not available in any state other then ky, because... well because it is a Ky soft drink called Ale81 and it is ADDICTIVE lol... people come here drink the drink then go back home and ORDER it to get to their house in the other state lol..

Amy said...

We do this for sure... I love to get the money.. I mean that is how we can buy things sometimes.

Erin M. said...

I am clueless here in Kansas. I don't know what that thing is---is it for recycling? We have blue bins we put out at the curb for cans, but we have to take our glass out for recycling (b/c it's dangerous b/c it breaks so much)...

I quit Diet Coke a few months ago and have never felt so good! But it was hard to kick the habit.

Cairo Typ0 said...

I remember returning bottles to the liquor stores for my parents. Ten cents a bottle just isn't enough for the pain and bitching caused by returning the empties.

Heatherlyn said...

We don't have those. I wish we did. My kids might be motivated to pick up cans they find. Although, it is pretty clean around here too. But they'd get a kick out of that!

Jennifer Leigh said...

HAHA! We have those same machines here. They are gross & sticky.

I used to save them all and go through all the hassle but when hubby kept throwing in cans with the "last sip" still in tow and then expected me to reach my hand in there AND put the bag into my Jeep I say Hells no!

Besides we don't gain $.10 we just get our $.05 that they charged us at purchase back.

Noelle said...

we didn't have recycling in alaska(at all...none...not even paper or glass or cans, let alone soda bottles) and you can tell a difference when you drive down the roads and peer into the ditches. alaska would have beer and pop cans and bottles littered all over because there was no incentive to recycle them...here in missouri there are very few "wasted" cans and bottles in the ditch. just sayin'.

Anti-Supermom said...

I use to live in Iowa - same thing - but it was a little better when they didn't have those counting can machines.

Those things are the worst.

•´.¸¸.•¨¯`♥.Erin.♥´¯¨•.¸¸.´• said...

Huh I don't believe I've ever seen one of those machines. I wonder if we have those. That'd be pretty sticky and gross though...People's backwash, last sips running out all over. Bleh.

Growing up we'd just throw the cans in a bag, and take them to hmm I think it was a Fred Meyer parking lot. In the back of a rig, they'd weigh the cans {probably more efficient} and then issue a check based on weight...

Mayhem and Moxie said...

What is this contraption I'm looking at? Doesn't your garbage service pick up your recyclables at your home?

Michigan seems like a very scary place to live. :)

I have never seen one of those before. Very interesting!! Maybe you could buy yourself a gumball?!

yonca said...

I rinse them, smash and put in container.Recycling trucks pick up them every two weeks.
I don't know why i am not doing this anymore.. taking them to the machine and getting money back instead. Thanks for reminding:)

Diane said...

ugh i hate recycling cans/bottles. it soooo stinks in return centers! we don't drink enough pop to even bother though... maybe 2 2-liters a month, so i just throw them out. i should be ashamed...

JennyMac said...

apparently this is one more reason for me to like GA. haha. We recycle but it is much cleaner and easier than this!

This Michigander agrees. I always hate how many we end up with, and I'm the one who takes them back AURGH!

What WILL you do with all those dimes?

Mommy24cs said...

LOL, yes whenever we come up there for vacation we keep a trash bag in our hotel room and fill it with our cans. Hubby always says its such a pain in the butt.

The big game is next week and just to let you know we root for the team up north! LOL

I went to undergrad in Michigan. Other than the fact that every 6, 12, or 24 pack cost 0.60, 1.20, or 2.40 more than it should have, we actually had a nice go of it with the cans and bottles. Here's why. I was the only one with a car, so two of us would drive around scavenging for cans and bottles...because that's what broke college students in Michigan do. We would stash bags of them places and take them in shifts. Basically, 1st car trip=4 people and a trunk full of cans; 2nd trip=1 driver w/ trunk, backseat, and passenger seat full of cans while the other three processed the cans at Meijer in the middle of the night; repeat as necessary. Our best night lasted 6 hours and netted just over $400. The cash lasted for one night of drinking. Mom and Dad would be so proud. And now I think I'll tell the full story over at my place.

We have to pay to have our bottles taken away. I think I'll groan every time I finish a bottle thinking of the people who actually get paid haha.

Rosie said...

I hate those machines. They're gross.

Martha said...

I hated to see the trash alongside beautiful Michigan's roadways growing up before recycling refunds. I guess it's all a tradeoff, B.V.

Heather said...

Really? We have those machines here and I love them. Not only the self satisfied feeling of being all good and recycling but coming away with money as well. Maybe I'm just too easily pleased.

Kimberly@PrettyPinkMomma said...

I have never seen those! I actually had to take a double take at the pictures to see what I was looking at. Were people looking at you weird when you snapping pictures of the recycler? Ha ha, sometimes I think I need to wear a sign that states "I blog, nuff said." so people might understand why I take pictures of the things that I do.

The Blonde Duck said...

I would not be amused.

Kato said...

Wow! Fancy indeed! Here you better have a good old stolen shopping cart to carry around your empties.

Most people just leave their's out on the lawn and someone will take them within minutes.

Ugh, I just made my city sound very.....homeless.

Pricilla said...

At least you can recycle them. Here there is no recycling available and that is just awful.

Just Breathe said...

Haven't seen one of those. We do all or recycling through our trash service. Or I can go somewhere to get the money but it's easier to just fill the bin each week.

He & Me + 3 said...

I live in Michigan too. I hate paying the deposit too. Although I don't drink pop...my husband does. Wow where in Michigan do you live? WE live near Detroit.

Firefly@www.firefly-shop.org said...

Wow, that would have me sooo over drinking that stuff in a hurry! Not that I haven't already done that, but I'm just sayin...

tori said...

one thing I don't miss about Michigan!!! I used to let mine build up too. I became a legend to the high school kids doing pop can drives...would give them 6 extra large black garbage bags full! it was worth the joy on their faces(and an hour of me standing at that stupid machine), but don't tell the Hubbie!

ModernMom said...

I'm with Menopausal New Mom...we don't get a thing from our empty bottles of pop except gut rot!

Secretia said...

It's a lot less bother to use the 2 litre bottles then.

Kristen Andrews said...

I would actually prefer to recycle them, and I HATE Michigan too... sometimes

Jen said...

This is what we do, stock pile cans until one of the neighborhood kids is having a fund raiser and then hand them all over.

Dan said...

Vermont and New York are also bad. Unfortunately, here in Colorado there is no penalty and given the distances between recycling facilities almost no way to recycle. Oh well. Someday I'll find a good way to get rid of the big garbage cans full of little cans out back.

Is that a recycling machine? We don't have those in Florida (that I know of.) I just throw my empty bottles into the blue bin and every Friday someone comes and takes them away with the trash...but I don't get paid. :(

Michelle said...

Do you mean to say that you have to go to the recycling center? Our city picks up our recyling....but then they don't get any soda cans because I don't buy any. :)

PropellerHeadMom said...

Bummer! Our trash collector picks up our recyclables. But it is totally voluntary.

They don't do that in Georgia. Thank goodness. I still recycle, but I'm glad I don't have to pay when I purchase.
I just got around to reading your post from yesterday. Lol!
I love your blog. : )

The Girl Next Door Grows Up said...

I have never seen that machine before. Our state doesn't pay.

When I was little we would crush our cans and take them to the recycling center to get $$$. WOw was that place disgusting and so was our little crushing station in the basement. Yuck!

Justine said...

What? What are you complaining about? We put ours at the curb for recycling. You get money for yours!

At least you can get some cash. You know what they do here in Vegas? They throw the cans and plastic bottles in the garbage. Oh yes, IN THE GARBAGE. Sure, we have recycling bins, but guess what? They don't use 'em. Ding dang irresponsible jerks... ;-)

I remember seeing those up at my Grandma's in the U.P of Michigan. We don't have anything like that out here. Sometimes I forget and end up throwing away bottles and cans. Oops!

i am sucking down iced tea and feeling fine, for whatever that is worth.

i don't think michigan is the worst state, although i have never been there. wait. isn't detroit in michigan? uh oh. i am not a big fan of oklahoma or texas. i shouldn't bag on the other states (even though i could) since i have not yet been to them.

sheila said...

In ohio we don't have those. But I bet there would be a lot less litter and junk going to the recycling center or the dump.

But Gosh, yes, what a pain in the ass that must be.

I drink country time. I just mix a gallon jug once and it lasts a long time. :)

Chelle said...

What is that?! Lol--whatever it is it looks/sounds like a pain!

Renée aka Mekhismom said...

So you have to pay a bottle deposit? I am not sure if there is one here, I don't think so. Since I don't drink much soda - I only buy it when my mom visits- it doesn't effect me at all.

La Pixie said...

wow, thats crazy! I didnt know people had to do that. I just throw mine in the recyle bin... of course... my cans are Pepsi!

kys said...

That was one of the good things about leaving Michigan. We recycle now but it's much easier to dump the cans into a bin than taking them back to the store every time.

~*~ Melissa ~*~ said...

I wish they'd give me a dime for each of my cans or bottles. We get a whole 30 cents per pound for the cans around here :(

Is it mandatory?
I have never seen such..
but, now I need to go to Michigan to figure it out

Mrsblogalot said...

Add mine to the suck ass states!
And please somebody pick up all my cans!

Krystyn said...

The non-immediate fam lives in Michigan and every time we visit, Mr. Serious forgets and smashes the cans and throws them in the trash. We're like "don't throw the empties!"

And, he wondered why it ended up being like $6 for a 12 pack!

Unknown Mami said...

I've never seen these things.

Smart Mouth Broad said...

Tell me more about this, BV. Consider it therapy. I'm curious. We recycle and it's picked up by the county. We're not forced to but we do. We get no dimes however. *pout* Should I move to Michigan?

Sarah said...

As Kari said, California sucks too.

I'm staring out my window at four big bags that need to be taken to the magic machine, UGH! We could just take them and have them done by the pound but you get way less of your money back that way.

I usually make my husband do it.

Stina said...

we recycled our bottles and cans back in Ct when we first got married. it was awesome. we would get a receipt and use the money to buy groceries. since we were just starting out and poor, family members would save their items for us to recycle. we moved to Ga and lost the extra funds. take care.

Alicia said...

Wow, that is interesting!!

Melissa B. said...

That's a funky recycling contraption you've got there. Is it in your garage? I don't think you'd like the city of San Francisco, much, either. They separate their waste into about 7 different bins, including garbage like potato peelings, etc. I'd be afraid of rats!

DG at Diary of a Mad Bathroom said...

I've never been to Michigan, so if you hate it, I hate it too.

We have that here too. And as cheap and coupon cutting as I am, I can't bring myself to use those can machines any more. I just hated waiting in line in order to smell like beer and collect a whopping $1.05. Just not worth it any more. I leave mine for the neighbor to pick out of my recycling bin.

I hated those machines when we lived in Mass. I've got to say I enjoy living in Colorado where we can just throw them in the recycling bin and the nice man takes them away for me. I don't miss the deposits at all.

Lissa said...

Never seen or heard of 1 of those machines until today. here in FL we just put everything in recycle bins. I do have fond memories of going around with a wheelbarrow as kid collecting bottles to make some money. My cousin and & I would always hit the houses that were under construction-we were sooooo rich. That is until we got home and had to share our hard earned wages.

Love Diet Dr. Pepper and am totally missing the vanilla cherry diet Dr. Pepper, that was truly my fave!

HeatherOz said...

oooohh! That would possibley convince me to stop drinking diet dr. p! hmmmmmmm....maybe not!

HAHAHA I was reading and saw the machine and I thought "Huh, I wonder where she's at, I remember those absurd machines when I lived in Michigan" and then you said you hate Michigan that's classic!!! I just hated that they wouldn't let me crush the cans!!

hmm.. those machines look fancy. I've never seen one of those out here in California. But uh... i'm not sure if I'll be smiling with those machines either! LOL

mellisarock said...

They pay you to recycle? OMgosh that's kinda awesome!! LOL...I just take mine to the recycling center and they make all the money! But then again...I just pull up through them in the container...I couldn't imagine feeding them into a machine! Have a great week!

We don't have those here in Illinois....just big blue containers that we put out for the recycling guy to take. Spencer gets a kick out of seeing the truck pick up all the recyclables so that makes it worth it!

Tattoos and Teething Rings said...

My kids would love to do that! Our cans get picked up (along with other recycling) with our trash; we can take the cans to a center if we want cash, but it's a pain in the a$$. SO not worth the few bucks we would get.

Alexis AKA MOM said...

We have the dump it off at a place that is far out, or you could use the recycling in front of the house that you have to use and oh yeah they get the kick back :)

Jessica said...

We have the same thing out here in CA. Big pain, I agree. My sense of frugality can't just put it in our regular recycling can here at the house. If I paid the money, I want it back! So, they just collect in my garage until I get enough to make it worth my time to do it... :)

LadyStyx said...

NY is one of those states too.

Zeemaid said...

it's a cool looking machine though... we take our to a big whole depo place but and actually have to sort our bottles and make sure they're empty etc. Oh and watch out for the bleach... NEVER wear good clothes there.

So funny, we had those nasty, stinky, dirty machines in Connecticut, too. I hated to bring them back, but just wouldn't throw them out because I knew that I PAID for them!
Here in Florida, we just have the recycle bins, and in the community we live in they don't even take the glass, only the metal and some plastic. And like mama-face, we have to PAY to have it taken away!!
