Twice this week I've replied by email to people I didn't know. I signed my full name and they answered me back with a nickname.
Let's say my name was Rebecca, which it isn't.
I signed my letter...
Best, Rebecca
They answered me back.....
Hi Becky!
What the heck? Who's Becky? I know I'm not.

What is that?? I never used a nickname in my correspondence. Why are they ascribing one to me?
As if we were friends. As if they had permission.

Follow the rules or I won't let you play.

Oh i feel ya on this one except it seems to be no one can spell ANGEL right which drives me BATTY.. I have been called angle, anal, anel, agnel, and last night one of my friend in online church services spelled it anglel now that was a new one lol..
You have got to be kidding me. You have NO ROOM to be complaining about this! You give EVERYONE nicknames. Corn sandwich.
I suppose I am so use to people who can not pronounce my given name correctly that I do not hear beyond that. I answer to almost anything, b/c even when I correct people they rarely get it right. I do not mean a slight variation. People pronounce it very strangely...nothing like it reads. Not just one of the two ways you can say it.
Blessings,
andrea
Blue Velvet, -is that ok?-hope you're having a great day!
hugshugs
BTW I don't know your name xx
Darn it all!
I'm not sure what that's all about.
I'm confused, bluevoilet!
I agree! I hate being called Kat or Kath by people I don't even know!
I'm just so happy to have someone talk to me who is older than a pre-schooler, I'll answer to anything!
I have a hyphenated last name. That really seems to offend some people. I was asked recently which was my "real" last name!
I'm so with you. It's annoying. Growing up, people called me Katie. For some reason, as an adult, people want to call me Kate or Kathy. Grates on my nerves. I have no problem with OTHER people going by Kate or Kathy, but I'm not a Kate or Kathy. Oh, and people who spell my name with a C...my boss does that, but then again, it took him 6 months to realize my name Katherine instead of Christy because apparently they sound alike! :p
This is just so weird. I am working on a post about his very subject...I get a nickname all the time, but always in person!!!! Makes me nuts.
Seems a little weird to assign one to someone you just met.
All three of our kids have names that can be shortened or ascribed a nickname - we always use their full names and it is irritating when new people especially use those.
My name is always butchered in one way or another, so I totally understand. :-)
Cece
Pretty hard to find a nickname for me. But people try. That is too funny. I atleast like it when they ask...then there are those people that you tell them your name and you tell them what you want to be called and they still call you by your full name. So annoying.
My legal name is usually shortened to a nickname I DO NOT go by. Kills me when someone presumes and calls me by that.
People get my name wrong all the time. But usually they just mess up the pronunciation. It is pronounced Cash a. I hope he/she gets your name right next time! Thanks for stopping by Healthy Moms!
Oh Becky... Don't be so serious!
Totally kidding. That is pretty funny (yet also annoying).
i call you nut sometimes shen i talk about you instead of your full name "nut in a nut shell" i think also i have referred to you as BV. i will do a better job:)
i totally know what you are talking about. we have a son named william. i will be so bummed if anyone tries to call him bill or billy
How odd! But, I get that a lot, too. Not from bloggy people, but irl.
On my blog I've been called Buffalo Dick, Buff, The Buff, Buffy, B.D, and Uncle Buff... it's all good!
This is a great post. It happens to me all the time, only it's not people shortening my name to a nickname. It's people choosing to call me by first name at work. I'll introduce myself to my patients as Dr. So & So, and they start calling me by my first name. If I wanted to be called by my first name I would have introduced myself that way. I guess I'm old fashioned, but it just feels inappropriate to me. Just like I try to call older individuals Mr. or Mrs. Whatever, and I don't call my parents by their first name. Wow. Long comment, sorry. Your post just hit a nerve, and I totally agree with you. You should call people whatever name they use for themselves with you.
Ohhh, BV, Blue, Violet, Vi...so sorry to hear that!!
My name can't be shortened to a nickname...but I did get introduced to someone by a friend as 'Anastasia' because she assumed 'Stacy' was short for that. What does bug me if people throw in a pesky 'e' in my name when there is none, or address me as Tracy...especially when it's in a reply email. :)
And I'm laughing with your daughter's comment... ;)
I still get nickname. Krys? Krysy? Not only do those look ridiculous....I'm so not either one.
At least they can spell your name correctly....9/10 the response has my name spelled wrong.
most of the time people will call me nicole. i gave up years ago and just go with it. then, months later, they find out my name really ISN'T nicole and they get all embarrassed. that's poetic justice, right there.
p.s....holy crap, it wasn't me was it?!
totally with you on this.. though i think it would be sorta hard to make a nickname outta my name... but IF you could.. i wouldnt like it either!!
I can understand. My daughter is Michaela and my in-laws said "Well, what do we call her?" What kind of question is that, you call her Michaela!!
If it is my friends I don't mind the nicknames but strangers...Use the name on the form, Dude!
That is just too funny. I have a name that no one can really get to a real nick name but Aim. Oh well..
See you tomorrow for the Round Robin..
That must be aggravating! I have the opposite problem. My full name is Victoria, I have never ever gone by Victoria. I've always been Tori, but there is one stubborn person who keeps calling me Victoria. I don't answer to it because I don't realize they are talking to me!
I do that all the time. I am guilty of being a nicker!! Oh the shame. It wasn't me who did it but I have done it. But at least they just shortened your name. I have people who call me a whole different name because somehow people don't see the difference between Carolyn and Caroline. I am so used to it now, I answer to both!
My thoughts are that people are lazy when they read letters/emails. They get too busy thinking about what words to respond with they miss the whole proper address to whom.
Maybe next time BOLD your name for giggles.
No problem, Vi!
My sister is named Jennifer and she HATES the name Jenny. She would never let anyone call her that. So people call her Jen. I get called Steph all the time. I guess people want to shorten? If my name were Rebecca, I'd prefer Becca to Beckie. I'd imagine if you complained, people would just start calling you "Becks!"
This seems very strange to me. Please don't assume that we are friends and are at a comfort level where you have permission to tweak my name in any way shape or form.
My wife's name is one of those names which can be spelled a few different ways, and to see people get it wrong makes me laugh sometimes, but as you can imagine it annoys her. On her FB page, where her name is clearly printed on the top, people still manage to mess it up.
My name is John, and you can feel free to call me, John. Thanks
I want to play so I will follow the rules. I'm kind of a stickler for rules anyway. Shoot, I get so needy for human contact I'll answer to anything. My name has only four letters and you can't imagine all the nicknames people come up with.
Have yourself one terrifically blessed day!!!
my full name is Georgina and I have been called everything from gina to george finally georgie just stuck...I feel ya
I've never had a nickname. :( But I would be seriously peeved if someone shorted my name. I mean "bra" and "bran" are just not that flattering! LOL!
oh man - this is my biggest - BIGGEST pet peeve!!! My name is Teresa and people will just out and call me Teri - I HATE that name! It just ripples my skin. I out and out correct someone if they do that!! That aside, my brothers call me T and I let that slide.
Hah! My name is Rebecca, and I HATE being called Becky. A few colleagues have started calling me Becky despite me asking (through slightly clenched teeth) to never ever do that. I'm not sure if they persist because I was too nice in my request, or if they're all just jerks.
~HB
I've had a nickname all my life and I remember a 4th grade teacher who called me Elizabeth and my friend Cindy - Cynthia.
Happy Twirls
That is SO true, my sister's name is Jennifer and people constantly tried to call her Jenny. It used to piss her off so bad! Still does, really, but most people know by now not to call her that!
I completely understand. I can't stand when people call me Kat or Trina. It drives me bananas.
Ack, you are such a bitch! BV!
Heeheehee
Justine :o )
I work with a lot of indians. My name is Amanda. They call me
Manada
Anna
Amada
Ananda
now I WANT to know your real name!!!!
haha
I have the most generic name ever so anything else is encouraged :)
Hehe..people pronounces my name "yonka".
It became my nickname:)
I agree, that that seems pretty rude. But.... I always wished I had a nick name. Instead, everyone just mispronounces my name :(
Hey there! Stopping by from SITS rollcall. You are just above me!! Cute post and I agree with you, it's very frustrating.
My name is Theresa. That is how I introduce myself. So don't ask if you can call me Terry, I would have said that if I wanted you to call me that!!
My parents and a bunch of their friends as well as a few of my relatives call me "Ali" but I never introduce myself as "Ali" and have never really used the nickname myself. After being with my parents and friends for a long weekend one of my boyfriends started calling me "Ali" and I got annoyed and made him stop. I'm not bothered by my parents and their friends using the nickname, but I don't really want anyone else to.
I did once work with a guy named Zach. He preferred Zachary, but then always introduced himself as Zach. I tried explaining the error in his ways, but I don't think it took.
Aacckkk. . . I'm a titch guilty of shortening people's names sometimes - one of my friends is Pat and I called her Patty and she HATED it - also hates to be called Patricia - she is only Pat!! Also, when our son was born - I really liked the name Anthony, but not Tony and we knew people would shorten it, so we didn't use it!
hand raised....probably guilty...
I HATE THAT. My name is Caitlin, so unless we're personal friends or you're my momma or daddy, you can't call me Cait or Caiti, but you absolutely may call me Caitlin, amen.
I HATE THAT.... seriously a pet peeve of mine..people always call me Steve when very plainly I sign everything Steven....it drives me crazy, take two seconds and type the N.....its my name...
peace
I used to hate when people called me Jenny. Then I discovered the more I protested, the more they enjoyed calling me Jenny. Now people call me Jen, Jennifer, Jenny, JD, Miss Animal Planet...it doesn't bother me any more.
I always refer to you as Blue...in my mind.
I bought the ingredients for your peppermint bark and can't wait to try to make it!! I will let you know; cuz I so know you'll want to know.
:)
My son is Elijah, and people will introduce him to others as Eli. Um, I've NEVER called him Eli. He is Elijah. I ALWAYS go by what the parents call the child or what they sign their name.
I know the feeling. People shorten my daughter's name all the time. She hates it! Of course, she corrects them. "It's not Becky, it's Rebecca."
oh, yeah, when people call me "Mare" I wanna scream. Even one of my closest friends calls me that and I don't know how to tell her how much I hate it!! :)
That is how I ever began to be called Liz. In my personal life, I go by my middle name (Elizabeth). Some people just started calling me Liz. It stuck. But only certain people call me that. Atleast they never called me Beth. If anyone ever called me Beth, I would totally tell them to never, ever, ever call me that again. LOL!
Wow!! That is presumptuous:-)
It is rude, esp when you don't know a person. You reply as they addressed themselves.
I have a nice short name that can't be shortened.. but my sister managed too.. lol.
Well, then I'm grateful Erin really doesn't have a nickname. Except that I've always wanted a nickname. My brother called me Ernie when we were growing up, but I wanted a cute nickname. LOL!
Ok, since I actually know your name I have to ask which one b/c I have a few friends with your name and they actually go by the back half of it versus the first LOL.
Now talk about a puzzle to try and solve in that comment haha
I get it a lot since I'm a Jennifer. I HATE being called Jenny. I won't speak to you if you call me it either.
My dad's name is James. He got a TON of nicknames. He and my mom were determined to give me a name that couldn't be shortened. So I have never had a nickname.
It is kind of odd how people did that to you, though. My biggest fear is misspelling someone's name on a comment.
I'm curious if maybe your email address is your nickname. mine is (my real one, not my gmail) a nickname so sometimes even tho I sign my email with my given name people will answer me with my nickname.
Not that I approve, I just figure that where they are getting the idea.
I hate that too ! Sorry Becc's
Yup, that's pretty damned rude. With a name like Sheila, I don't get much of that. But I'd probably get pissed.
There's a present waiting for you on my blog!!!
I always prefer Elizabeth, but no matter what they say 'Liz', and I do not like that...no nicknames, but then someone began calling me Chef E, and it stuck...my father would say, you can call me anything you like, but just do not forget to call me for dinner...I know an old one :)

Ugh! I completely understand. I have people call me Chrissy all the time and it drives me nuts. Hello? My name is Christina, which is exactly what I said/typed.
I get that too. My name is Kimberly & I go to the doctor, dentist, bank whatever & people are always say Kim. I also always sign my name as Kimberly. I've been going by Kimberly since 1987, before that I was Kim, but always hated it. Also people call my daughter Tarra, not Tara (like Sara). Even my parents do that. So I totally feel for you.
ok blue LOL.......
I mean blueviolet..... you nut in a nutshell you..
LOVE ya girl....... well my friends call me g.... and drives me nuts when people who don't know me call me that you a holes...
grissell
People want to call Jackson "Jack" all the time. And by people, I mean my in-laws. Which is a liberal use of the word "people".
Wow Vi, that is SO annoying!
I hate it when people do that!
That is funny Bluey : ) Very funny.
It's not that my name was shortened to a nickname that bugged me but that I and my twin sister were always called, "Twins" or "The Twins" or "Twinny Winnies". Ugh!
My names Guadalupe and they call me all sorts of things Lupe, lupita, lupizz, lupsters! LOL But those are friends of course! Someone outside of that has never given me a nickname.
Very funny post blue!
I've ran into people named "timmy" and "danny" and they get pissed if you call them anything else because that is their real name.
People are too casual on most occasions.
My mom hates when people shorten names, so she told all of her four children to not let anyone call us by anything but our given names. Both my brother's didn't listen, my sister and I did. :)
LOL.oh my gosh, I do that to some people (other bloggers). I hope they don't get offended!!!
that doesn't happen to me often, but my maiden name is Sleeper, so you can imagine the names I was called, actually, still am.
HO HO HO! My little buttercup! I hate it when they call me Jolly old soul! Merry Christmas!
Well my name is Shandal, like chandelier, without the ier. A lot of ppl don't pronounce it right, so I'd actually prefer to be called Shan or Shanny. In fact my "public" name is Shannon. Like at starbucks or putting in my name at a restaurant I use Shannon. Haha
I've seen you commenting on some of the same blogs that I read and I figured I'd stop by and say hi!
I totally agree. That drives me nuts. I have one blogger that loves to call me Mich. Even though I sign my name Michelle she still keeps referring to me as Mich. What's that all about. LOL! I've never been called Mich in my life. Thanks for stopping by today.
So you meant I cant call you little girl blue? or my favorite nut?
this is strange. And to think that just a few years ago we were struggling with the Ms. versus Mrs. versus Miss thing.
One of my best girlfriend's name is Janelle. Her sister calls her Nellie but is the only one that does so - I call her Nell sometimes but anyways...
Janelle was in labor and was pushing and her sister was her coach. We were sitting outside her hospital room and her sister kept calling her Nellie so the nurse, who was trying to encourage Janelle to push harder, took that name and was saying, "Come on Nellie... You can do it Nellie..." She sounded like she was at a horse racetrack cheering on a horse. Finally my friend Janelle, who is normally very proper and polite, said, "My name is Janelle. If you call me Nellie again I am going to leave!" It was funnier because I could tell that she really meant it.
Oh crap...I just addressed your card, and it was my pet name for you!
LOL!!
Agreed. That's obnoxious. I was just remembering the Seinfeld today where someone in Peterman's office starts calling Elaine by the name Susie. She's offended and annoyed but vocally so once she's referred to as "Suze." NATURALLY. As an actual Susie myself (when I'm not playing Gropius on my blog), I can attest to that!
Hi Becky! LOL. Just kidding - I will follow the rules - promise. If I ever call you anything that you don't like, just slap me upside the head okay?
I get that a lot too, but I don't really mind what they call me (so far)...
Becky? EWWWW. I promise, here and now, never to do that to anyone. I don't think I ever have. Know what's just as bad? I've had people call me Cynthia. Not my name. My parents named me Cindy. That's it. So call me that! Even worse, I once had someone call me Lucinda. WTH? People should stick with the names they're introduced by until given permission otherwise.
So, I hear you give people nick names - that's totally cool and also totally different than people just shortening your own name. It's one of my pet peeves! You can give me a nick name any day - just don't call me Marti! - Got that Becky ;-)
hahaha! well, sorry for laughing! how dare somebody do that!
Well, I won't be calling you Becky, that's for sure!! I purposefully gave my kids names that are difficult (or at least I thought so) to shorten and wouldn't you know that it's Little Miss that came up with a nickname for Bubby---which I don't really like! People, in general, are truly amazing...and not always in a good way! :)
I wonder if people know others with your first name and wrongly assume you want to be called the same nickname as their friend/family member?
I can see how the presumption of it would be annoying. Fortunately no one can do anything to my name.
I get the same thing. My name is Susan, but I still get called Sue. I don't like Sue. I want to be called Susan. Ugh!
were they getting all chummy because they wanted something from you? hmmmmm
I get Alex for Alexis. Now my friends call my Lex which is cool but someone new calling me Alex did you think I needed to become a boy?
I hear you!
And I wanted to stopp by and thank you for your comments on my site, it really means a lot, thanks!
The nickname my mom and sister gave me was Tray. I hate it now and I refuse to go by that. Everyone I love knows that too.
Hugs!!
I am going to nickname you, dear friend! Is that ok?
I feel your pain. You have the fun sort of name that people like to change. LOL
Angela * Ang * Angie * G * lol
I names my child Tyler NOT Ty and he will be called Tyler until I am gone!!! Feeling your pain=)
HA! I am so sorry! I kind of know this but not through a nickname...but by my first name alwaying getting mispronounces ...its E-va and not EYE-va :)
...good news is you can't really give me much of a shorter nick name ;)
It goes along with people thinking they can comment on how tall or short you are or touching your belly when you are pregnant.
Holly
I hear you. My name is Traci (with an "i")and when I was a kid, my uncle called me "T"-racy which literally drove me crazy. Also, I cannot tell you how many people didn't pay attention and called me Stacy.
That said, I am guilty of generic names of affection like "sweetie", "hun", and "baby". What can I say, I'm southern.
Thanks for stpping by today. I am so amazed by your blog. :-)
Agree... I always dislike it when someone that doesn't know me or just met me calls me by a nickname... oooo
Not that I don't mind nicknames IF I know them and they aren't the silly ones that I have already heard millions of times...
Guilty,'Liz'!!! :-)
I know exactly what you mean...
Love to you.
Kelly'
What really gets me is when people give my kids weird nicknames. I want people to call them by the name they were given!
I have not given you a nick name i think. Or have I ever crossed that line??? I know I have been tempted to write BV a couple times but it is too close to BVD for me as in the underwear and I would never want to offend you. But now that you are bring it up, I just had to reveal that little tidbit...
That would be annoying. My name is Amber so there really isn't room for a nickname. I guess someone could do Amb but that's weird.
I just hate it when people call me girl. Like, "What's up, girl?" I'm all, "I have a name and it's not girl."
That is so rude! I hate it too, when they call you an inappropriate endearment like hon or sweetie!! Yuck!
Haha! Mine is when people I barely know call me my nickname. The one that they hear close friends and family members use, so they think they can too?? And it just rolls off their tongue so dreadfully wrong and makes me wince?
Yeah. I hate that. They are not welcome in my club.
No one has ever done that to my name...I mean, what are they gonna call me? Hel? That doesn't sound right.
That is presumptious and gutsy for someone to do that!!
The only nickname people think of for me is Leesh, which many people call me actually. Love it, right? Like "dog leash". Nice...
I like your name better without being "nicked". My daughter's middle name is the same as yours.
Does this mean I can't call you BV? HPH
I usually have nicknames for all my really close friends & family...but not for random people I don't really know.
Take it as a compliment that they feel so connected to you & like they've known you for years.
I'm lucky that my name is so short...you can really only make it longer as a 'nickname.'
It's rude, for sure. Additional 'misnomer' issue for me is when I'm introduced or sign Mrs. So and So and they call me by my first name. It's a breach of familiarity. A breach, I tell you!
At work, we used to use our initials to sign off on things. Before I was married my initials were CAP. To this day my husband calls me CAP or CAPPY. I figured that sometimes, particularly when I was in a bad mood, he could call me worse things :-) So why not CAP.
That would be really annoying.
Oh yeah - that's right up there with "Honey/Hon"...especially when the person saying it is about 10 years your junior, but still quite condescending either way!
I'm not your honey! I'd even prefer "Ma'am" [shiver] over "Honey"
That seems so strange to respond to an email with a nickname! People do it to me and call me or write to me as Britt, which I hate, and it drives me crazy. My 3 year old knows I don't like it and gets mad for me! She rocks. We go through all variations of names before we give them to our kids so they don't have to deal with it. We also have made sure the name does not rhyme with boobie or anything - you know - so we can avoid some unfortunate nicknames.
I'm with you on this one. I have one of those names that can be nicked with a couple of endings...a y...and ie...an a or left it its full parentally bestowed version.
Pisses me off when people take liberties even AFTER I've introduced myself with the name I expect them to call me! There's a coworker who not only uses all three versions but often calls my by the WRONG name altogether!
I HATE when people shorten my real name (Nicole) to Nicky or Nic!! UGH! I don't mind when they shorten my blog name to Tats, though, since it isn't my real name. But, yeah, if you want me to completely ignore you, call me Nicky.
I have a four letter a name Ruth... very simple.. but people want to add the -ie on the end which actually makes it longer but still nick-namey...
I really really dislike it.
I am very verbal with people about the fact that I dislike being called Ruthie and most people rspect that...
funny how my MIL STILL calls me Ruthie(after many years) and laughs when I STILL ask her NOT TO DO THAT.... funny maybe but not to me!!
I feel your pain!
Gah Vi, you're so mean :p LOL ♥
LOL - I like it when people shorten my name..it feels endearing.
I WOULD shorten yours, but since I don't know it...oh well.
:)
I shorten my own from debbie to debi- favorite snack cheese of anykind with crunch
That drives me crazy too! People have a tendency to call me Dannie..which is not allowed unless given special permission! Ugh! I feel your pain! I think it's just rude.
Good grief, 135 comments. People have a lot to say about this topic! And I agree, it's uncool to call people something that is SO NOT THEIR NAME.
What gets me is when people get all "creative" with naming their kid then get upset when you don't pronounce it correctly.
Christina...we all know this.
Krystynna....huh?
Come on people, give the kid a break. They will have better things to do than to have to spell their name to everyone they talk with.
Or do you want them to have to go through life cringing every time someone butchers their name?
I always use the name someone introduces themselves as...if I can pronounce it.
But for now dear, I will call you "blue nut" for short. xxoo
Well I was just going to start calling you doot, but whatever, if you are going to be so sensitive about it. hee hee
I don't like it when people do that in person either. I do not like shortened versions of my name and I have to speak up right away because it's contagious and then other people start to call you other than what you want to be called.
I hear ya. I never EVER shorten the name unless the person with the name says that it's ok.
Your right, they can't give you a nickname just because.
So it's not Rebecca. I hope to learn your name sometime. :)
It would be very annoying to have your name shortened by someone you barely know. Although, I've read a Dear Abby or two where someone was complaining that extended family members insisted on calling them by shortened versions of their names when they did not want a nick name, or by the wrong name altogether. So, I guess it could be worse than strangers messing it up.
