Oh Snap!

January 8, 2010

We caught a mouse yesterday.

I used to equate having mice with being dirty. I was so naive. The little fellas just want to be warm. I can appreciate that as I like to be warm too. Nonetheless, they're simply not welcome here.

I leave traps out all year round in the basement, and I check them once a week or once a month or once a quarter.

A spring trap got yesterday's mouse. However, I can't understand why he went for the prize because the cheese that was on there was literally over a year old and as hard as a fossil.

That's a desperate tummy, I do believe.

Oh snap...very clever:-)
Poor thing. We don't have them inside...yet. But because it is really cold in FL right now, they are looking to get warm and every now and then you will find a little mouse...or his bigger cousin, if you know what I mean, in the swimming pool. Looking for warmth and found it in warm water but...
Unfortunately, today we found a little bunny:-(
Please warm up!

we NEVER have mouse problems.. another thing i love about cats... my dad swears UP AND DOWN that a mouse can smell a cat, and will NOT come around.. and i sorta think i kinda agree, we live with a field behind us, and woods to the side of us and NEVER have seen a mouse...

have a wonderful wkend!!!!

Poor mousie. I have never had a mice problem, but my parents did a while back. There was one little guy that kept getting in through, they think, some hole via the crawl space under their home. They put down traps, too, but I don't believe he was ever caught. Since I have been back home staying with them, he hasn't come out. Then again, I have three cats with me. So, maybe there is something to what the commenter above me said about mice not coming out if there are cats around.

No, but we have had a possum invasion!!

Eek! No mice that I know of, but we once became the unwilling home to two possums. Took alot more than a spring trap to relocate them though.

When we lived on base, our house was up on a hill so we would get field mice. Charles was on deployment when we happened to get an infestation (3 mice) I was so grossed out! I bought some of those pellets that they eat and then crawl out looking for water. Well one day I was cooking dinner and Caitlyn who was about 2 at the time came up next to me and she said "Look Mommy, I got a mousey" I looked down and she was holding it upside down by the tail and it was dead. I think I about had a heart attack. I washed her hands over ten times!! Not fun times at all!

No mice here. If we did though the cats would get them. Now when we lived in Santa Fe, we had mice in the garage. The bad thing about rodents in Santa Fe or New Mexico in general is that they can carry the plague. Yes, I said the Plague. The Black Death. I was shocked as well but in NM there is plague and in the area we lived a family got it. WTH? it's like the Dark Ages and such. Anyway, because we lived in the boonies we had field mice and they got warm by coming into the garage. They never came into the house and again if they had they would have been dead in a minute and we might have gotten the Plague. BTW, I hate mice or any rodent for that matter.

I was naive in thinking that mice meant you were dirty too. I've known very clean people who have had mice. I've been fortunate enough to never have them (but now that I said that I can here them scurrying over now).

EEK! We've had a mouse issue (I refuse to use the plural form). Ours sounds like your situation...traps in the basement and attic and I check them periodically and 2x a year the exterminator comes to make me feel better. If I see something I feel a little weak in the knees and become a girlygirl.

We get mice every once in awhile. We now have a couple outdoor/garage cats that seem to be keeping them out. We live in an older house in the country surrounded by woods and farm fields so I know they are out there!

No mice to my knowlege. Certain times of the year we do have a spider issue though. Being an arachniphob, you can often find me screaming like a school girl(I'm a 36 year old tough guy in rel life) begging my wife to come kill it. I'd almost rather have mice, or tigers for that matter in the house than spiders.

When I lived in Manhattan I had a lot more than I do know and I had to get over my fear of them because someone had to take them out of the house lol!! My cat was my de-mouser. Living in CT now, I make my hubby cart the critters to the curb :O

Years ago my big fluffy fat cat dragged something inside that I thought (without the aid of my glasses) was a leaf. When I reached down to picked it up, it scurried away under the couch! I opened the front door, and spent the next 3 hours chasing him around with a broom... good times.

We had mice issues when we lived in Northern Oklahoma. And, those little suckers were picky little guys. I'd try to catch them with Kraft American Cheese Singles, but it'd never work. I had to upgrade them to blocked cheddar. Worked EVERY TIME!

Alice in Wonderland said...

Even though I have an old cat and two kittens, we still get the odd mouse sneak in! They are Harvest Mice, and are only about an inch long, but with really long tails!
Actually mice don't like cheese, so if you want to catch a mouse, use flour or bread on the trap. We use humane traps, that don't kill them, so we just put them back out-doors!
It's flies and wasps that I'm scared of! I just cannot stand flies!

Mama Wheaton said...

About 8 years ago or so we had a mice invasion. We could hear them in the walls and the heating vents. WE put traps down in the crawl space and then my husband put traps in the heating vents. Which would have been fine except the first two trap when the mouse got in them ran off with the traps. So he tied strings to the traps and anchored it outside the vent. We caught over 50 mice that winter. For the record we were surrounded by farms being torn down for subdivisions. We are not dirty either.

Sherrie said...

Back when I was pregnant with the little guy, we had mice. There was actually a family of little babies living behind our fridge. DH sucked them up with the Dyson though b/c we had no traps. That was a sight I tell ya. We then taped up the little hole area (where the fridge plugs/hoses are on the wall), and we've had no issues since. I can't stand the little boogers.

In the mobile home, growing up. MOM and sisters were afraid of them, I was stuck the with the job of hunting them down and getting rid of them.

One time, I found one taking a nap in the middle of the kitchen. No shame, no worries..just laying there like it was the king of home. I put a shoe box on top of it.

To kill them I used to pour hot water on them. They died quickly, a very painful death, though.

We lived in the country, so we had mice once in a while all the time.

Wow...I guess you hit a nerve:-)

I happen to think mice are cute--just not in the house because they leave their poopers everywhere. I'm glad you see that mice don't come because you are dirty--on the contrary--mice (as are all rodents) are very fastidious about their grooming and cleanliness. Haven't your kids had hamsters?? They wash themselves like 4000 times a day! They only stink because their territory is like 2 miles and we confine them to one square foot--if they are lucky.

So, I'm glad/sorry that you got your mouse. Ick on the clean-up.

Crickets. They creep in and get stuck inside our shoes. A shake down is always necessary before slipping into our Reeboks.

Oh and a lizard that lived in the staircase. We thought he was one of J4's plastic animal toys but moved when we got close. Freaked us out. He's gone now, returned to the front garden.

We have had two mice, fleas, and tons of roaches since we moved in. The first mouse would go around and lick all the peanut butter off the traps and sneak away all uncaught-like. Eventually though we heard a SNAP! while up for a midnight feeding and sure enough, there he was behind our microwave (ew!), trapped.
The other liked to run into the kitchen behind the fridge. We caught him fairly quickly though.

Mice I'm okay with, it's spiders that freak me out. I can't handle any spiders in my house! We used to have a problem with ants getting inside to eat the cat food. We had to hire and exterminator and all that junk, it took forever to get rid of those punks!

Eventually they stopped paying a visit to my unit but I saw them all over our neighbors window. YUK!

Oh, yeah, every year when it starts to get cold. There is nothing like being woken up in the middle of the night by the cat running around like a maniac chasing one. WE had a mouse problem last winter in our old (VERY CLEAN!) house. It was horrible. Our dog would occasionally catch one! I was terried to leave my room in the morning for fear what would be out in the house. We had to poison them. I'm sad to say I was glad to do it. Ick!

conversationswithmoms said...

I've had them and I did not like the feeling. I was so freaked out I hired an exterminator to get rid of them. He kept adding on services and I kept saying yes to anything he wanted to do as soon as I heard him talk about the disease they carry.

My hubby thought that he took advantage of my state of mind.

We got them back about 2 years later but this time, we just bought the poison food. I wasn't as freaked out and saved a hell lot of money.

Oh yes. When you live in a house that is close to a hundred years old in a big city, you are bound to get them. Fortunately we have three cats, but only one is a hunter. She caught one for us two months ago but did not kill it, so I gently extracted it from her mouth and put it outside.

Now, we have another, because she is literally slinking and stalking her way around the house. I dread going home and finding mouse guts on my pillow. Sigh.

We've had mice in our house before - even watched one walk right in front of our cat who showed no interest in catching it. We finally set up traps in the basement and they've moved elsewhere. ;)

Two years ago we had one very fat, healthy mouse. I knew he was here (I could hear him) but of course hubby would not believe me, because he couldn't find evidence (chewed cereal boxes was what he was looking for) Of course not...I have three children who think of nothing of leaving food laying around, this guy had it made.

One night while making supper he ran across the counter and the back of the stove and went down the side of the stove and then was behind the stove. We set a trap that night and he was caught by morning. We set the trap for a couple of weeks afterward and never got another.

One mouse...I could not believe he didn't have a family! We have those sonic noise plug ins...they work great!!

No problems inside. My cats bring me gifts outside so I have to be careful when I let them in. I use those sonic plug ins and have for over 12 yrs. You plug them in a outside wall outlet and it emits a noise (we can't hear) that makes small rodents and spiders, roaches, flys, etc's nervous system go crazy. You can't have hamsters, or other small animals or big spiders. This will kill them. Mom, if you want to get rid of kids unwanted pets, this will work.LOL. May work on snakes? LOL

They wouldn't even call the landlord, it was so gross. I couldn't call because I wasn't on the lease. One time Oscar picked up a blanket and rat jumped right out. Another time we were doing dishes and one came out from under the dishwasher. We set traps too, I'll never forget coming home after watching Disney's Tarzan to find smashed baby rats in the traps - so gross and sad. In it was this tiny (dead) little mouse - according to my husband it must have shrank when it died! ha!

My mom had a mouse in her house last year. My sister wouldn't even sleep in her room because the thing had gotten into her dresser drawer. My mom put out those rat friendly traps, where they just go into a box to get the cheese and can't get out. Well, eventually the mouse went in, but he got overheated. So there we were--my sister, my mom, my nephew, and myself, all the people afraid of the mouse--outside, trying to nurse the mouse back to health after we set him free. We got him more cheese. We tried to give him water. It was hilarious. The mouse ran away once he got his bearings, probably right back inside. Yes, we were idiots, but animal loving idiots.

So far the only unwanted creatures that I know about in my own house, knock on wood, are spiders. I can't get rid of the things. Also after Christmas I came home to find a pile of dead bugs had fallen out of my Christmas tree. Next year I'm going back to the fake one for that reason alone.

I know...they are the grossest! We had some high up in the garage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No mice, but I hate those darn silverfish things that hang around my guest bathroom. One dropped on me the other day while I was on the throne! Nearly jumped off.

We get mice fairly often...our house backs onto a big field. They come in for shelter from something and scurry around our garage.

Oh. And spiders. *shudder*

Had a whole NATION of mice once. Took them out one by one. Now I have lizards in my garden and geckos in my house, plus baby brown snakes which I think are legless lizards, but the wife and I disagree

We had mice about a year ago. I don't mind them in principal but they're LOUD.

In seven years, we've only had one little mouse. And it was really small. I felt so bad for him when we tried to corner and capture him and instead ended up killing it. Traumatic.

At our other house we also had a big mouse.

You are right, it's not about dirty-ness (in most cases, lol). THey are just cold and hungry.

Well...we have voles outside. I had never seen one before I moved to PA.
I felt bad for him so I took a lid and made him a plate. For Christmas, I served him a cheeseball and he very much enjoyed it.

I've had mice in a house before and we humane trapped them, took them in the car and released them in a neighbors yard. That was me.

I love it! We have had mice too and first I felt horrible, then I realized they find the tiniest holes to get in and we just can't seem to find them.

Peanut Butter is better than cheese for catching mice, by the way.

We would have 1 or 2 in August and then one year we had....5.... then I called the mouse guy and he comes out 4 times a year to check for holes. We haven't had one since!!

PS. THe month we had 5, our cat got TIRED of catching them :-) Then he would just chase and play with them.

We have two hunter kitties so if there are mice around here, they've received the memo because we haven't seen any.

Our problem here are snakes! Ewww!!!! I'd rather have mice! OMG I just had a thought...what if we do have mice and the snakes are eating them! Okay...now I have the heebie jeebies! :)

AudreyO said...

Our visitors are spiders and ants and bugs. I've not seen the rodent type visitors here.

Heatherlyn said...

Too many flies. They like the guinea pig. :( :( :(

Thank goodness all the other critters have stayed outside. But we don't like them in our yard next to the house either!

We had a RAT problem! Yes...big ugly RATS Not in the house, thankfully! They were living in my neighbor's garage (they left boxes of clothes and other items the rats nested in and they had open garbage). The nasty things would run into my backyard and get into my garbage and my garage. In fact, once I had one climb on the window screen! We had about 3-4 in my garage and a ton in my neighbor's. I am so glad they moved. Not a rat sighting since!
Of course you don't need to be a flith to get rodents.

Try mint. Rodents HATE the smell of mint. You can plant it around your house or just make little packets of mint out of mint leaves and cheesecloth.

(oh and how in the heck do you keep up on so many comments! WOW...you always have so many! You certainly deserve but it's amazing. And you even find the time to comment on other blogs! You go!)

I think the dogs would find it before we did, but I have seen centipedes here. I would much rather see a mouse, those centipedes are disgusting!

I've never had a mouse yet, but we get a lot of huge cricket like bugs.

I think mouse are pretty cute, but not in my house. Then I'd trap them too.

We've never had mice get into the house, but we've had mice in the house.

Ah, need an explanation?

Our two cats!!!

We have all sort of creatures running around outside. My most frequent visitor is the rolly-polly bug.

LT said...

Yuck, on the mouse! Yes, we have, they are always getting into the big can we keep dog food in and then can't get out. What a shock when you go to feed the dog. Love your title by the way!

not in this house, but in our last house we had attic rats. They dropped onto our roof from a tree... ewww.... I freaked out in the middle of the night hearing the rats scamper back and forth in the ceiling above my head.

Not to my knowledge ... and I find out I do, I'm so outta here!

When did I become my Mom said...

When I was little we had mice in that old house. We named them "Faith", "Hope" and "Charity".

Unwanted visitors? Uh, yeah! Only, mine takes shape of a man....

Kristin said...

In Florida, unwelcome visitors are palmetto bugs. Giant flying roaches. Ewwwwwww!

G-Zell said...

i have been so lucky. but we do get crickets because my house is backed up to a field and they just started doing something with the land. I felt like I was experiencing the movie of moses with these suckers LOL...

Oh ya then there was the snake ughhh in my bathroom

Christina said...

Just squirrels. They would always find a way to get into the attic. Been awhile though... maybe they moved on.

Me (aka Danielle) said...

Most of my unwanted visitors are of the eight-legged nature! As for the mice...none of those, thank goodness. Although, my neighbors swear the area has a mouse problem. Maybe, me not having the problem, is a sign that my kitty cat is pulling her weight in this house!

Just my MIL. Badoom-chi.

Oh, luckily no. Although we did get a yellow jackets nest in our yard this summer. But our bug/pest people will come get rid of those for us. Hope you don't get any more.

CC said...

Too many. And rats. And millions of ants.

Shandal said...

Yuck! I'm happy to say no, we haven't had any unwanted visitors, besides some spiders and some ants in the summer.

I had a mouse in my house. Made a guide to catching mice with a difference here on my new blog "www.BobVersus.com".

1 man. 1 mouse (hopefully!).

3 attempts to catch the mouse.

Take a peak:

Loving the site by the way, really smart design!
