Shoes Mean Business

January 15, 2010

A Nut in a Nutshell
I've discovered something over the years. I am only productive when I'm wearing shoes. It's a fact.

If I want myself to get things done, I have to put shoes on. If I'm wearing just socks or slippers, I start to slack.

A Nut in a Nutshell
It's really just a mental game.

And it's absolutely stupid that I have to play this little chess match with myself.

My brain is controlled by a pair of shoes. Size 7.

Makes sense to me!

lol. my theory is its th sock...if i am bare foot i am pretty good as well.

I know how you feel, I am always afraid of stubbing my toes, seems like I hurt my barefeet every time I go outside, even in the house if I'm barefoot too long.

When I clean house I wear my shoes. It seems like I am more likely to finish everything.

Frau said...

I'm the same way...but more of a size 7 1/2!

tinahead81 said...

my sister and i were just talking about the same thing! if we don't have shoes on, we're totally useless! lol

singedwingangel said...

ACtually it is not a weird concept. Have you ever been to the site flylady.net. the very first thing they teach you to do is when you get up in the morning wash face, brush teeth and hair, get dressed and put on socks and shoes. the shoes make one more prone to getting up and getting busy , it is a signal to the brain to get moving and busy.. soo no your not weird..

GregoryJ said...

Is this a woman thing? Uh-oh, I'm probably gonna hear about that....

I don't think foot wear affects my domestic productivity. Outside the house, yes, because I don't go out without shoes.

Thanks,
GregoryJ

If I want to get things done on a larger scale, I have to wear my running shoes. (No, I don't run; I just wear the shoes.)
It IS all in our heads!

No kidding! Slippers don't even cut it. I must have on "real" shoes.

hhmmm.... this is interesting, and reading the comments. i actually do feel less lazy with my shoes on too. but those slippers...omg they are soooo comfy!!!!

sheila said...

that's funny! Love the shoes, they look a bit like my daughter collection of converse.

I feel most productive when I put my regular clothes on and some makeup, lol. (I work at home)

I'm a size 7 too! Yea, we're shoe sista's, lol

JennyMac said...

haha...at least it works for you!

Lanie said...

Me too! Socks mean comfort... shoes say GET BUSY!

PropellerHeadMom said...

I have to at least have socks on to work. Shoes or no shoes doesn't make a difference. I also need makeup. I cannot work without makeup on.

Tori said...

In order for my mind to comprehend that it's time to work I have to be dressed. If I'm just doing work at my computer I don't need shoes on, but if I'm up and walking around shoes are necessary! I guess it really is all in our heads.

Robin said...

Slippers = cozy and comfort..that's as far from work as you get...I feel the same way..shoes or sneakers amke me want to sprint..BTW, Im size 11 just like Paris Hilton...oooohhh..I am 5'10" though.

Carolyn G said...

Now are you sometimes wearing jammies and shoes? If I could I would never ever wear shoes and I would run around like Raquel Welch in 10,000 BC. Of course I wouldn't look like Raquel more like Roseanne but oh well. I can dream.

Rob said...

That is funny. Melinda says she can't be productive in PJ's and that she needs to get dressed to be productive. I can be productive in PJ's. I have been doing it everyday for the last teo months. LOL.

Happy Friday!

That is funny. I own both the chucks and the slippers pictured.

I share your need for shoes on all day. My feet are freezing for 9 mos. out of the year but even in the summer I always have some type of shoe on.

Poindexter said...

I know that my shoes definitely affect the way that I feel about myself. I feel so much more attractive and confident if I'm wearing gorgeous shoes than not-so-gorgeous shoes. Maybe I'm just shallow that way. Hope not, but it's possible.

homeschoolceo said...

I feel the same way about pjs. I have to get up in the morning and shower and get dressed. Even though I'm home all day and could wear pjs or sweats, I'd feel like a slug.

We have a no shoes on the carpet policy however...but I'd love to get rid of the carpet :D

You know...I was just thinking about this the other day!! Ever since I started "getting dressed for work, including shoes", I am taking my blogging much more seriously. Dress for the job you want, right?

suzicate said...

I get this. If I put on shoes, my dog automatically goes nuts, thinking she's going for a walk...I think she thinks my life revovles around her...why else would I put on shoes?

Ninety comments on shoes? NINETY?! I'm lucky to get 10 comments on a post that I've spent 3 weeks writing accompanied with an award-winning photograph that I took while hanging out of a plane.

That's not what I signed on to write, but holy readership, I'm not going to read all 90 comments to see if somebody already wrote that one of Flylady's main principles is to get dressed all the way to your shoes in the morning if you want to really get things done around the house.

So, yes, I know exactly what you're talking about because I'm the same way!

Mama Wheaton said...

That is so werid I had to think about it but I am the same way. WE have a no shoes in the house policy but if I don't wear shoes it becomes a sit around the house day. You should get a research grant for millions of dollars from our government and get to the bottom of this dilema.

Like Singedwingangel, I thought immediatly of 'fly lady's admonition to 'get dressed to the shoes' before beginning to 'fly!' Sometimes it works for me . . . I also love going barefoot, but I have tried wearing shoes more to clean, & it can help :) Setting the timer @ 15 min. intervals is my best prompt (& I can still get *stuck* on-line - but at least I'm aware of time passing, lol!)

The Penny-Pinching Mama said...

I'm with you, but I'm more like that when I don't put "regular clothes" on. If I stay in my pjs or wear stretchy pants all day versus a pair of jeans then nothing gets done. Well, maybe some blogging but that's a whole 'nother story...
