Chocolate Gone Wrong

February 8, 2010

With Valentine's Day around the corner I started thinking once again about those boxes of chocolate people seem to like.

When I say people, I mean other people. Not this people right here.

Nobody really wants a surprise in every bite. Do they?

And face it. There are only about 2 really good chocolates in every box.

The rest is filler, garbage, second-rate cocoa muck.

Even chocolate has feelings, and trust me. This hurts 'em.

Why would someone as sweet as you ever need chocolate!? (Whipped cream, maybe!) LOL

Kathie @ Just a Happy Housewife said...

I could not agree more!

Although, my husband bought one of those Hershey's Pot of Gold boxes and there were a lot of good ones in it, I was so surprised.

Buckeroomama said...

Couldn't agree more!! :)

singedwingangel said...

ummm I like bridge mix lol and a caramel other then that not so much

secret agent woman said...

Except for the awful coconut ones, I like the variety on a box of chocolates. If I wanted just truffles or plan chocolates, you can get those but for a big box of assorted chocolates I like the surprises.

DG at Diary of a Mad Bathroom said...

It's true. I go through the box looking for the caramels and I throw the rest away. Who eats cherry cremes anyway?

mo.stoneskin said...

Is Otin going to buy you chocolate anyway? ;)

Veronica Lee said...

I hate the bitter ones!

Lisa said...

You have to spend a fortune to get a box with chocs that don't make you gag with every bite:) I'll do without.

Low Expectations said...

I hate how some boxes don't put the little paper in there to tell you what is in there. The only ones I like are the coconut and the caramel ones!

Justine said...

Ooh, I so agree! If it was all filled with say, truffles, then it'd be a good box of chocolate! But that tooth breaking caramel? Blechhh!

Btw.... thought you were re-doing your blog?

Justine :o )

Suzanne said...

Ditto! If someone gives me a box, I will poke into each one until I find the caramels...all 2 of them:-)

Diane said...

i so agree!! bring me the chocolate i LIKE!

everythingisjustwonderful said...

When I see a box of chocolates, it's always been picked over. The lid is turned over sitting in front of it and people have eaten the peanut butter cups, the turtle candies and the vanillas if they're desperate. All the rest are half-bitten and waiting for some chump to finish them off. NO THANKS. I'd take a blue symphony bar over a box of chocolates any day!

Caro said...

As a chocoholic, all chocolate are good ;)

The Mommyologist said...

You are SO right. Why can't they just make a box with all caramels??

Andrea said...

They should all be caramel. Hahaha.

Too Many Hats said...

That's why I prefer to get a gift certificate for a pound of See's chocolate then I can decide exactly what goes into the box - no control issues here.

Beth P. said...

I totally agree with this! I hate biting into one and finding some pink crap in it. That is one of the worst.

Queenie Jeannie said...

That's true unless you get Godiva. They don't make second-rate cocoa muck, lol!!

Hugs to you!

Frau said...

I used to bite all the corners looking for the caramels.

Life with Kaishon said...

Man! I wish I was more like you. I even eat the yucky chocolates!

honeypiehorse said...

So true, dime store chocolate is narsty!

tori said...

so true...now I don't feel bad about throwing them all away. Seems like everyone does it!

yonca said...

Good point! Couldn't agree more!

kyooty said...

If I ever got one of these boxes? I'd eat every single one.

Fresh Mommy said...

Haha, and true... I only like a couple of the chocolates from each box. For this Valentine's day I'm just hoping to be holding my baby... hopefully he's not still 'in' there. :)

sheila said...

Yes, it's very frustrating when a box comes without a guide, lol. But...I never ever let a chocolate go to waste. If I poke it or bite it to see what's inside...I HAVE to eat it. It would just be insulting to the chocolate if I didnt.

Wouldn't it?

Molly said...

I stick my finger in the underside of the chocolate, and if I don't like what I see, I put it back for the next person.

Miss Angie said...

LOL, I ONLY like the fruity ones. The orange, Raspberry or Lemon filled... I hate the rest.

suzicate said...

the really good one has the caramel. What's the second one?

Melinda said...

caramel and coconut are the only ones I eat, the rest is garbage.

Thanks for visiting my blog and sharing on your post partum. That is exactly what I was wishing for during my posts.

As for chocolate I am a chocolate snob so yeah a mixed bag is never my fave.

Hair Bows & Guitar Picks said...

Totally agree!

That's why I only want a box full of Reese's cups :) Then I know I will eat all of them!

Robin said...

Godiva and truffles...thats all the chocolate Ill ever need....! oh and chocolate martinis...the only surprise in those is how Ill act afterwards....

Tori said...

Yup, couldn't agree more! My parents always got us those mini boxes with like 5 chocolates in them. I'd break them all open, eat the two good ones and give the rest to my sister. lol

Life is good! said...

i agree. the caramel and coconut are the only ones that get eaten, the rest in the trash. although we haven't bought and exchanged these for many many years!

chocolate and peanut butter are my friends...

Busy Bee Suz said...

I totally get this. I was looking a the heart shaped boxes yesterday for my girls...and I thought: "they won't like MOST of this"...that is why I go right for the good stuff: Reeses pb cups!!

Amen! Just get me some chocolate with chocolate inside from See's, and I'm good.

For real. Who comes up with some of those gross fillings! Yuck!

I agree 100%!! I just want Skotchmallows from See's. Then I am a happy camper.

I could not possibly agree with you more!! :)

I agree -- People would be better off getting a custom box of chocolates for their Valentine. Filled with their favorites!

Feeling Fit With Dana said...

I agree completely. No chocolates for Valentine's for me please!

Susie said...

I am the queen of chocolate but even I have to agree here. The only exception (in my hubble opinion) is Godiva. They really make chocolate in a box work!

dannyscotland said...

I, too, hate the waste of good chocolate mixed with what I jokingly refer to as "contamination". Plain chocolate, please and thank you.

I like the chocolate filled with nuts. But that's all.

totally agree.. i only want a box if its all of one kind.. and all of one kind that i really like!

Heatherlyn said...

I was raised on see's candy. And it is fabulous. So ... if it isn't see's, pretty much, I don't want anything to do with it! :) I agree with you that most chocolate is junk!

TechnoBabe said...

You hit it right on, we don't want a surprise when it comes to candy. This year I am picking out my own box of candy and pointing it out to hubby and he will get it for me! This way we share the candy and there are no surprises.

Dee said...

oh I so agree. WHY would they mess up perfectly good chocolate with orange and strawberry CRAP inside?!?!

Quirkyloon said...

I just want the choco caramels. Since it comes with all that other gunk, I just request a box of Nestle's Turtles.

To. Die. For.

*salivating*

Alyssa said...

Oh, but think of all the warm fuzzies those chocolate rejects get from all the touchy-feely fingers trying to figure out what's inside.

Connie K said...

So true !! am a truffle girl :)

MiMi said...

I only like the ones with the nuts. Go figure.

Tiffany said...

surprises in chocolate are NOT where it's at. just tell me it has caramel and nuts and i'm all over it!

Sara @ Domestically Challenged said...

Doesn't matter. Crap or not, I'll eat 'em.

{Kimber} said...

you are SOOO dead on with this...surprises in every piece...yeah NOT good bleck!!

Janie B said...

I have to agree...I do not want to be surprised, especially with some sticky pink or yellow muck. I like the nuts, the chocolate, and the caramel. That's it. Oh, and only milk chocolate.

Kelly said...

I agree! I love chocolate but I am not tempted by these at all!!

Andrea (ace1028) said...

Ugh. I SO prefer the ones that are either solid, hollow or have chocolate/caramel inside. That being said, I wouldn't turn it away, either!

Holly said...

Our chocolates always end up cut in half so we know what we are getting.

AJ said...

I am confused by the ones that LOOK like chocolate on the outside, but inside they are dry, sugary nastiness.

blech. I like the boxes that have all of them labeled. Better yet, I like to go to See's and just ask for a pound of caramels with dark chocolate. Makes me happy.

jessalyn said...

i like when they give you a map. i don't think thats the top shelf chocolates though.
i usually just bite it and put it back. :)

foxy said...

Oh no, i could eat almost every chocolate in the most regular box and be happy. And that's about all the chocolate I'll need all year.

Pam said...

I totally agree. Yuck. I'd rather have a bunch of my favorite candy bars. : )

Alicia said...

LOL..you are so right!!!

Arizona Mamma said...

Yes, these chocolates may as well be chocolate covered turds.

But...have you tried See's? If not, it's worth a shot. So good!

HeartsMakeFamilies said...

The Blonde Duck said...

I love you consider the feelings of chocolate.

Bernie said...

Well as much as I love a good chocolate, there are some I don't care for quite a much. Kind of like a roomful of people, I might like some of them but not all.

Fear not, for those of us who HATE a maple nut or something similar, there are folks who love them.

shortmama said...

Give me a couple of Hershey's bars over those nasty things any day!

Organic Motherhood with Cool Whip said...

I am so with you and so are my children apparently because they like to take a bite out of each, declare it yucky, then move on to the next. And the next. And the next. And so forth. Wanna come over and have some prelicked, pretasted chocolates anyone?

Tamara aka Cheapskate Mom said...

Coconut and Caramel. Those are the only two flavors I like. The rest - meh. I'm more of a gadgeet gal myself. Get me something cool I can play with (get yer mind outta the gutter, I'm talking cameras, and software!) Oh and jewelry!

Carolyn G said...

That's why people should give one of those giant bars of Hersheys. You know the ones that weight as much as a small child and really hurt if they fall on your toes. Been there , done that.

The Girl Next Door Grows Up said...

Vanilla cream baby... vanilla cream

that is the only one I eat an dyes I will take a bit or push my finger in to see what is in the middle.

One would think that my husband would know to just get vanilla cream, wouldn't one?

Nope!

that is why i like reese's peanut butter cups. no surprises. just pure deliciousness. :)

Pricilla said...

I like the coconut, the caramel and the ones that taste like a heath bar.

Drama queens mum (Kimberly) said...

I'm not a big fan of boxed chocolates either. Mostly dark choc with caramel & nuts if any.

tickledpinktwice said...

I guess that's why the boxes come with maps.

Here in Cincinnati, we eat Esther Price chocolates and I don't think there's a bad one in the bunch...but we're a little biased.

Stopping by from SITS.

Just Breathe said...

Never cared for those ugly boxes of candy. Buy me candy I like or don't get me any. I happen to love the nuts & chews from See's Candy.
Otherwise just get me some Dove!

Erin said...

I'm with you 100% on this. Can't stand most of the flavors in the box. Hubs & I aren't into Valentine's anyway, so it works out. I'd much rather get flowers on an ordinary day than on a forced Hallmark holiday!

Two Normal Moms said...

And the two good ones would be stuffed with carmel. The rest can got straight to the trash!

When I was little if someone gave me a box of chocolates, I used to squeeze them to see what was inside. Coconut was always the worse. BLECH.

Mary said...

My hubby LIVES for these things, but he isn't a picky eater...at all. I don't like dark chocolate or all the fruit flavored ones, but it is quite entertaining to watch him pick his way through the box, calculating each choice very carefully.

Teri said...

Too true! Unless they have caramel on the inside, I don't want them!!
