Newsies is Broadway Bound!

Newsies the Musical

“Newsies” is coming to Broadway!

Listening to Steve Fickinger, VP of Creative Development and Licensing, rhapsodize about the arrival of “Newsies the Musical” to Broadway and the seven year journey it took to get there, I couldn’t help but wish I could be there on opening night to see it myself.

He said, “I’m really, really proud of the show. It is in the best sense of the word, I think, an old fashioned musical. It has tap dancing, it has dancing, it has soaring ballets, it’s got toe tapping tunes, and it’s got a story that is…fantastically timely…David versus Goliath and the little guy taking on the big sort of behemoth and… winning.”

“Newsies” is the story of the 1899 strike by newspaper boys against publishing powerhouse Joseph Pulitzer, but this is nothing like the “Newsies” you may remember from the movie.

Fickinger explained that very few people have the particular skill set needed to write a musical, but the job piqued the interest of none other than Harvey Fierstein, a legend in theater, and he added a lot of substance and more memorable characters to the show.

Steve says, “I do believe in heart, I do believe in humor, I do believe in emotion, and I think “Newsies” has all those things.”

With show stopping melodies from Alan Menken, rousing and energetic dance numbers, and extraordinary production designs, I look for “Newsies” to be a smash hit success.

“Newsies” will play at the Nederlander Theater in New York City. Opening night is March 29, 2012.

Ticket Information: Advance ticket sales begin Monday, January 30th through NewsiesTheMusical.com, by calling Ticketmaster’s Disney on Broadway hotline at 866-870-2717, or at the Nederlander Theatre box office (208 W. 41st Street).

A big thank you to Disney/DreamWorks for covering my travel expenses and providing the interview opportunity.

Oh, how I wish I could go! I LOVED this movie as a kid and I still watch it often now. It inspired me to become a newspaper reporter as an adult, which I did for six years. New York is a little out of my league right now, though.
