I made this Apple Cinnamon Crumb Cake as an experiment. I’ve never really been mad at sugar, so I’ve never felt the need to use a sugar substitute in my baking. Weird for somebody who only drinks diet soda, huh?
And that’s why I broke down and decided to try Domino Light, an all-natural pure cane sugar and stevia blend with half the calories of sugar.
Apple Cinnamon Crumb Cake
(a Domino Sugar recipe)
Ingredients
Apple Filling
Granny Smith apples
lemon juice
Domino® Light sugar
cinnamon
Cake
all-purpose flour
baking soda
salt
Domino® Light sugar
butter, softened
sour cream
vanilla
eggs
Crumb Topping
butter
all-purpose flour
Domino® Light sugar
cinnamon
Directions
1. Place chopped apples in a bowl and toss with lemon juice. Pour out remaining lemon juice, then add Domino® Light and cinnamon. Cook apples in a microwave for 1 minute and set aside to cool.
2. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and lightly flour a 13”x9”x2” baking pan; set aside.
3. In a medium bowl, combine flour, baking soda and salt; set aside. In a large bowl, cream Domino® Light and butter with electric mixer on medium speed, until light and fluffy. Add sour cream and vanilla, mix. Add eggs, one at a time, scraping down the sides of bowl with each addition. Reduce to a low speed, slowly add flour mixture into wet ingredients.
4. Pour into prepared baking pan. Layer apple filling evenly over cake batter. Bake 18-20 minutes.
5. In a medium bowl, combine all topping ingredients by hand, until mixture forms crumbs. Once cake is baked, sprinkle crumbs evenly over the top.
6. Continue baking for 12-15 minutes. Allow to cool 10 minutes before cutting into slices.
In terms of how Domino Light performed as a baking ingredient, it behaved exactly like sugar. And, as far as taste… I couldn’t even tell the difference. When my friend came over, she claimed she could tell, but now I’m wondering if it’s because I told her beforehand. Oops. However, she said the cake was absolutely delicious!
Since there are no artificial ingredients in Domino Light and it only has 5 calories per serving (and I have a lot left), I’m going to try and “lighten up” a few more holiday recipes this year!
Apple Cinnamon Crumb Cake
Ingredients
Apple Filling
- 2 - large Granny Smith apples peeled and finely chopped
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons Domino® Light sugar
- 1 teaspoons cinnamon
Cake
- 1 ½ cups - all-purpose flour
- ½ teaspoons baking soda
- ¼ teaspoons salt
- ¾ cup Domino® Light sugar
- ½ cup butter softened
- ½ cup sour cream
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 3 - large eggs room temperature
Crumb Topping
- ½ cup butter chilled and cut into small pieces
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- ½ cup Domino® Light sugar
- 1 T cinnamon
Instructions
- Place chopped apples in a bowl and toss with lemon juice. Pour out remaining lemon juice, then add Domino® Light and cinnamon. Cook apples in a microwave for 1 minute and set aside to cool.
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and lightly flour a 13”x9”x2” baking pan; set aside.
- In a medium bowl, combine flour, baking soda and salt; set aside.
- Pour into prepared baking pan. Layer apple filling evenly over cake batter. Bake 18-20 minutes.
- In a medium bowl, combine all topping ingredients by hand, until mixture forms crumbs. Once cake is baked, sprinkle crumbs evenly over the top.
- Continue baking for 12-15 minutes. Allow to cool 10 minutes before cutting into slices.

I have been saving any glass jars that I come across or empty out that I think are pretty inorder that I can make sweet treats as gifts for Christmas and store them inside and then make it crafty in apperance by hanging two items from it that I make one will be a fabric padded circle lid topper that can serve as a drink coaster and then put the recipe of the item inside the jar on the side with a decorative card so they can make it again themselves. So I’m glad I saw this post because I found lots of great ideas on the Dominos Sugar web site like the Almond Butter Toffee which I will be making for sure, thanks for inspiring me 🙂
