Home Sweet Home, Chicago #99SummerDays

You know what I’ll be doing a lot of in my #99SummerDays?

Flying.

And driving.

And more flying.

I’m sure I’ll find a way to add a train, a boat and a trolley into the mix as well. Why not?

I actually adore traveling, so being on the move is exciting to me. I majored in Travel & Tourism and worked in the  industry until I had my kiddies. If I lived in a bigger metropolitan area, I’d probably get back into it again.

But I live in podunk-ville, so I just get my fix by going to conferences, press events and on my own getaways.

One of those trips this summer has me headed back home to Chicago. I lived there for a while, and oh, how I miss the Windy City. Plus, nobody does a dog like Chicago does a dog.

You know….like this.

Hebrew National Chicago-Style Hot Dog

Now calm down and don’t be finger wagging at me over the lack of authenticity. Remember, I live in North Carolina as I’m trying to recreate a Chicago-style hot dog, and I don’t have the Chicago brands I love to use. Sheesh, y’all. ;)

I’m not sure there’s necessarily a recipe to it, but there are definitely condiments that must be in a Chicago-style hot dog, a ridiculously fantastic amount of them.

Ya gotta have:

All-beef frankfurter

Poppy seed bun

Yellow mustard

Diced onions

Sweet green pickle relish

Tomato wedges

Kosher dill refrigerated pickle spear

2 sport peppers, whole

Dash of celery salt

But skip the ketchup. Zero ketchup. Stay away from the ketchup!

Happy #99SummerDays to you!

  1. That hot dog looks amazing! I’ve never had one from Chicago but that one definitely looks authentic!

  2. Funny, I never realized that different areas had different ways of putting together their hot dogs! I don’t know if I could go without ketchup but there seems to be a whole lof of other flavor going on to notice ;)

  3. We have several trips to the movies planned for all the fun new releases, a trip to Arkansas with the family, a trip Orlando for NKOTB concert as a 5 day girls getaway, a trip to Orlando at the end of August for some fun at the theme parks :)

  4. You know, that Chicago dog actually does look good {never had one}, but I would have to take that pickle off and eat it separately. So I can hear it crunch really loudly. :)

  5. I always skip ketchup. Not a fan of it, at all.

Happy I’ll get to see you this summer!

  6. I was in in Chicago last week! I grew up outside of Chicago and my parents still live in the same house actually. While we were in the Willis Tower (still so want to call it the Sears Tower) there was even a sign about no ketchup on your dogs :) Though I gotta admit I do like ketchup on my hotdogs.

  7. Alexis aka mom says:

Oh wow that dog looks tasty

  8. We are down for a day trip to Chicago in two weeks! Excited!

  9. Sorry this Chicagoan like ketchup :)
