The cost of gas when my kids were in school was insane. Not a day went by when I wasn’t running at least one of them somewhere.
My daughter was involved in everything under the sun after school, and my son was involved to a lesser degree but still busy. Almost every single afternoon, they’d walk in the door, change clothes, grab a snack and we’d head right back out the door.
But only one of the kids, my daughter, had the ability to hustle. A plaintive cry from me to “hurry” had absolutely no effect on my son, none. No matter how hard I tried, he just wouldn’t pick up the pace. It’s like he wasn’t capable. It was the weirdest thing!
But wait, there’s more. He would finally make it out to the garage and I’d start to back out and then he’d remember he didn’t have something vital, e.g. his instrument for marching band practice. Ummmm…
Do you know how much gas I burned just waiting for that child to run back in and out slooooooowly as he fetched what needed fetching?
Between the actual driving and the waiting to start driving, I was constantly at the gas pump!
Ways to Save While On The Go
Carpooling: I actually hate carpooling because well, I just don’t like it. I’d prefer to drive alone and not worry about or rely on someone else, but I force myself to do it because it just makes good financial sense and the savings in gas expenses are too significant to ignore.
Gas price tracking apps: Apps like Gas Buddy can be really helpful. I won’t shoot across town for a penny, but I’ll arrange my route accordingly in order to take advantage of a lower fuel price.
Pack snacks: To avoid having to make fast food stops, pack snacks to have on hand in the car as you’re running from one place to the next.
Use a credit card with a Cashback Bonus program: Choose a card with benefits like the Discover it card. I’ll never have a credit card that doesn’t offer a rewards program again. I decided to try it about two years ago and I’ve earned hundreds in cash back already, so I’m mad I didn’t do it way back when.
Of course, one of the best ways to beat prices at the pump is to avoid driving when possible. Skip the hassle of running errands and shop online—it’s easier on your car and wallet (plus saves time)!
