Dividing Your Day the Healthy Way

As many hours as there are in a day, I often find myself spending far too many of them working. It’s very hard to walk away when there’s a giant list of items that have yet to be crossed off the to-do list.

Having my office in my home makes it twice as hard! It’s very tempting to “just check email really quick.” The problem is — it’s never just a quick email check. One email leads to something else, and an hour later… I surface, and realize what happened.

Productive? Maybe. But the right thing? Probably not. No, definitely not.

Life needs balance.

That’s why I love the #GreatStarts tip I’m sharing today from Team Kellogg’s – Four Great Ways to Divide Your Day.

For every day to be successful, it should balance time between all of the most important things: Work, Play, Others and Me.


I can't say I'm always successful at balance, but I really do try. I have certain hours of the day when I refuse to work, and that time is restorative for me.

Spending time with my kids is my greatest joy, and I'll drop everything when my kids visit or even call. It doesn't matter what I'm working on; I shut the computer off and focus on my family.

My favorite time of the day to exercise is morning (mostly because I can't find excuses not to do it when it's the first thing I have to do).  It often feels like a chore... I admit it, but when it's over, I always feel great for having done it.

And in the evening after dinner, I love to take walks around the neighborhood or go jump on my trampoline!

I'm also very conscious of maintaining a well-balanced diet and staying hydrated, and I allow myself a good night's rest. I average 8-10 hours of sleep, and one of my favorite weekend indulgences is a good long nap.

When I sleep in on weekends,  I often end up having my breakfast for lunch instead. Kellogg's Raisin Bran tastes just as great as noon as it does early in the morning. Trust me!

Although I still need to learn to give work a smaller piece of my day, I'm confident that I'll get there.

  1. OMG, Liz – I can so relate with the WAH thing. We are basically ALWAYS on the clock. It’s tough to balance. I am also working on “balance” this year!

  2. Working from home is awesome and hard at the same time. The whole reason I work from home is so that I can be with my family, have lunch with them, and spend time with my daughter, and then I do sometimes get sucked into those “quick” email checks, too. But I’m doing better about pushing “pause” when my daughter says “Mama, let’s play!” because work will still be there, this moment may not be.

  3. I love the 4 blocks of dividing the day, I need to do a much better job of balancing my day. I spend way too much time on the computer between work and the blog. I need to do more activity for sure.

  5. I really do need to incorporate more exercise, it’s just so dang cold this winter. :) And I know I put in far more hours of work in each day working from home than I would if I worked out of the home… I need to be more balanced.

  6. I completely struggle with the same work-from-home balance! It’s incredible hard to balance work/social media work and stay organized and feel somewhat balanced. It looks like you are doing a great job!

  8. This is one of my goals for 2014! Better organizing and dividing my time so I can be the most productive while I work and the most present with my children. I like that they included a “me” category, too–definitely important!

  9. I’m so jealous of your 8-10 hours of sleep at night! I also have times where I refuse to work, mostly when my children are home from school.

  10. Why is breakfast always tastes great, but it’s weird to have a salmon burger for breakfast. :) Cereal is one of our go-to dinners when we are stretched for time between the four other areas of life. It’s nice to have something so easy and healthy.
    Thanks for the post, it brought some insight in how I need to better organize my day (I’m guilty of too much work too :) )
